Amazonas, and the flooded forest in Balbina
Adding a little more information to my Amazon Collection, I thought an old video of mine would be an idea.

It was sad to see so many trees for many square miles, dead due to man flooding the forest to create a hydro-electric dam. But at the same time, it has become a reserve and home to Giant Otters, Pink Dolphins, and all sorts of nature and wildlife, and it also brings tourists to the area. The video has been sped up in the first part on purpose.

Film taken 12 years ago, in a place called Balbina in Brazil, with a 10 year old video camera :)

While exploring the flooded forest, we saw splashing and went to investigate. Turned out to be a young macaw trying to hold onto a tree for dear life. Underneath the surface of the water below it, we could see piranha just waiting for their chance, there must have been dozens. But not today!

Paulo, the local lovely guy with us for 3 days as the boat was his, looked at us as if to ask us what we wanted to do! I suppose there are people that would just put it down to "survival of the fittest" "natural selection", but it is a very different world we live in these days. We have had an impact on everything that lives on it, so it is my own feeling that if anything can be saved, then we save it.

Amazon Parrot
by Stephen Peel

This little wild Amazon Parrot, along with a wild Toucan, made themselves at home around a village in Balbina Brazil, and were really great fun.

Sometimes - like this time - the forest moves in on your rustic digs. Friendly enough guy though and left my stuff alone.

Well, on arrival in Manaus, I had just one night in a lovely hotel called the Hotel Tropical Manaus, a stunning 5* hotel. It was just to settle in before heading out, and as the exchange rate was so much in my favour, it cost little more than a cheap hotel in the UK.
