Polar bear babies in Alaska- A few years ago I was lucky to be able to visit an Inuit village where bears have their young. Getting there involved driving up the Dalton highway and then flying in from Prudhoe bay to Inupiat village (weather permitting). Bear cubs can be curious however regulations require you to move if they get too close to avoid them learning to much about humans. Common sense indicates moving away anyway from their protective mothers.

Matriarchs - One of the greatest pleasures of my travels to Tanzania is getting time to focus on animal and bird behaviour. These three mothers, part of a herd of around 15 animals, are presenting the face of their collective care for their young. If you look closely you will see the vague outline of a baby who in an almost choreographed dance has moved back and under as the three matriarchs move together and forward. (touch our kid we break your face). This was a general first caution response we saw in a number of groups. If they were even more concerned another big mother would come forward with trunk raised and ears out. Watch the cars hit reverse fast when that happens. One learns to give them plenty of space. The collective maternal concern is very moving.

More Puffin magic this time from Lunga Island, the largest of the Treshnish Isles. Puffins move surprisingly fast when they land with a beak full of sand eals so you have to be fast to catch them heading for their burrows and hungry chicks. #Scotland #puffins

it's soo good to snooze - waking from my afternoon nap just now, after our Big Christmas Breakfast today, I stumbled on this image of mine from Antarctica. Seems appropriate. So wishing you all; Happy Christmas, Happy Eating and Happy Snoozing.

Wild horses of Namibia at dusk. - These are the wild horses of the Namib (desert) who have found a way of surviving in some very tough country indeed. Their origins are disputed but one theory is that a core may have come from the south african army, the german colonial forces and an abandoned stud. They have been at least 100 years in this area. The area was 'restricted' because of diamond mining interests and is now part of the Namib Naukluft Park. It is likely that the restricted area status protected the horses, since they were left alone. It was certainly wonderful waiting for them to come through kicking up dust as the sun set until I was surrounded by them. (reprocessed)

Family Home - this home is built of pebbles. Not much of a home you think? Ok you try building a home by carrying stones in your mouth! Especially when you do it by stealing building materials from your neighbours when they are off to work (catching fish).

sticking out his tongue? - We were watching the mother when these three cubs (of four) emerged out of the reeds to drink while in  Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania. Thank goodness it wasn't the mother looking at me and licking her lips!
