In April 2015, I went on one of the most memorable trips of my life. My youngest son and I went to Cuba and spent over a week exploring Havana and surrounding areas. It was a remarkable experience.

I'm honored that one of the photographs of this upcoming book was taken by me on that trip. The book will be released in eight weeks and I'm so excited to read the stories of the six people featured. They have truly amazing stories. Congratulations to Ivan Darias Alfonso on a project well done!

An Audience of One

The Critique:

Negative space gives power to the watcher glowing in rich light and golden colors. She is captivating with her haughty posture and certain presence. The light, and her positioning in the frame, fixes her in time. Isolating her in space draws my eye to every detail. She is the entire focus of the photograph. Folds of cloth fall into patterns and drape her in strength. Yellow is a happy, optimistic color and it sets a complimentary mood with her bearing. Spatial relationships and balance are unimportant here – it’s all about her.

What I had learned:

Sometimes subjects in photographs call for attention – beg to tell a story beyond just the visual – ask for their own identity.

San Nicolas

The Critique:

Light hides and reveals turning a simple story into a bit of high drama. The graphic arrow directs my eye into the photograph. Vertical lines narrow my vision. The vivid blue color makes an immediate impact as the couple is framed within the frame. The well lit floor fixes them in light and time. An analogy perhaps, that they walk from lightness into the dark; the dark creating a mystery. His tattoo adds a bit of whimsy. They make a strong subject. They are the story.

What I had learned.

Watch for transitions in light. Interesting things happen.

Packed

The Critique:

Packed together, faces grim – where are they going?  Street photography invites stories.  This one is pure street but with a strong art deco theme.  Frames of color accent the frames of doors that showcase the people.  Diagonal handrails create a chevron shape – or possible an downward pointing arrow – and depending on your imagination can be an indicator of the moods expressed by the rider.  The shot is centered and it works well here – it puts focus on the main subjects.  The bright outer colors add balance and anchors.  Spatial relationships are evident and a major force of the shot.  Light is flat which helps keep the 2D look – again furthering the story – it’s crowded conditions.  I like the perspective – straight on – hard to look away.

What I had learned:

Look for stories that can be told visually.

The flower market in Old Havana is just what I expected.  Vintage elegance - filled with fragrance - and with people looking to add a little beauty to their lives.

Just a bunch of guys hanging out like usual.  For them it's a chance to visit and laugh and maybe catch a fish or two.  For me it's a feast for the eyes - a work of art in the making.
