Spotted this Ammonite, that had been here for 200 million years...

Grockles have recently destroyed it with their 'brand new' fossil hammers...

Watchet Harbour

A port for a thousand years and beyond..

Under Alfred the Great (AD871-901) Watchet became an important Saxon port and a site of a ‘Royal Mint’, coins of which have been found as far distant as Copenhagen and Stockholm, providing important evidence of the Viking raids that took place during the period AD918-997.

The Bristol Channel is the second highest tidal range in the world. That is to say it has an 8 knot rip and a height from low tide of of 15m, and more at times..

More Watchet maritime info here.. http://www.watchetmuseum.co.uk/maritime/

The Sunny fields of Somerset

Top mid left is Steepholm, an impregnable island in the Bristol channel. Stronghold of the Vikings....
In the foreground, bottom right, The Court House. Featuring both Elizabethan and Jacobite Architecture.

There also is another, more modern phenomenon in this image

Pineapple Wildflower,

Used to pick these after they had flowered, and rub them in our hands for their Pineapple flavour...

Found these growing along the cliff line at Quantoxhead.

A very hardy plant with an explosive aromatic bonus...

The Basalt of Reynisdrangar from Kirkjufjara beach.... all of the pebbles here although rounded have been effected by tectonic forces... the legend has it that there were three trolls who were pulling a three masted ship through the storm to the shore..... but they were caught by the sunlight at dawn and this turned them into needles of rock....

Horizon perspective

On a clear day, we can see a distance of approximately 3 miles or 4.7 km while standing on the beach...

At 100 feet or 30 m in height, the horizon is at a distance of 12.2 miles, 19.6 km

The ship on the horizon in this image is therefore around 33 miles or 55 km away form this spot, the clouds gathered around the Sun are likely to be significantly more distant, they are the tops of clouds where the base can be seen, beyond the horizon... .. .

On a ledge, too a lookout

The Geological view from here is around 200 million years old, the lookout post is more recent, and the Sea, ever present.
