Hello dear, lovely Googlers! When I finally saw this engaging piece of San Francisco history, I was utterly amazed, though not at all surprised at its effect on me. As you can imagine, I've seen this photographed by others and have always wondered what it would be like to feast upon it in person. Well, it knocked me off my feet, with its stupendous lines and curves! The way the light and shadows encased the stairs dazzled endlessly. This beautiful staircase is located at the San Francisco Mechanics' Institute in the financial district of the City. I decided to process this in color, but will be transforming this small collection of images to black and white, to capture the raw essence of my very personal experience.

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of joining extraordinary photographers and friends, +Roxanne Bouche' Overton and +Dan Shehan, on a photo journey, where I was able to capture some delicious architectural images! And it was great fun to finally meet Dan, too!

"Sweet, Refinery" © Alex James Photos 2017

A couple of years ago, I managed to catch a few shots of this old factory. It's still operating today. The C & H Refinery is covered in rust and is a decay lover’s delight. The details are to-die-for and the colors amazing. Even the sky managed to cooperate this fine day! (re-work of original)

Here’s some history via Wikipedia:

The California and Hawaiian Sugar Company was founded in 1906 and operated from 1921 to 1993 as an agricultural cooperative marketing association owned by the member sugar companies in Hawaii. Its headquarters are in Crockett in unincorporated Contra Costa County, California.

In 1993, the member companies sold their interests in C&H to Alexander & Baldwin in Honolulu, and the refining company's status changed from a cooperative to a corporation. Alexander & Baldwin subsequently sold its majority share to an investment group in 1998, retaining a 40% common stock interest in the recapitalized company.

In 2005, the common stock shares were acquired by American Sugar Refining (ASR, better known as Domino Sugar), a company owned by Florida Crystals and the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida. Florida Crystals is a privately held company that is part of FLO-SUN, a sugar empire of the Fanjul family whose origins trace to Spanish-Cuban sugar plantations of the early 19th century.

+Steve Alfano and I were recently out & about with our photography buddy from Germany, +StPaul Herrmann, in Sacramento. We had a great day shooting at McClellan's Aerospace Museum and followed it up with a superb meal in Old Sacramento. Good times! Just as were about to head home, I noticed this building, its cool staircase (from the parking garage), and of course, the terrific shadows, thanks to the angle of the sun! Think twice before putting your camera away ~ you never know what will pop up! :) .... and yep, finally, stairs for the most fab +Liz MC, who runs +Stairs Thursday! :)))

Erased © Alex James Photos 2017

Happy Weekend, Googlies! What might have happened here? I love these abandoned locations ~ they let our imaginations explore! This was captured on a trip to Mare Island, a peninsula located in Vallejo, California. Plenty of buildings here to check out, if you enjoy photographing decay. In 1851, Mare Island served as our country's first naval station here on the West Coast. It was closed in 1996.

(The Ziggurat Building in West Sacramento, California)

Happy Weekend Googlies ... When I saw this structure, I imagined it had lifted off the ground. Enveloped by the night sky, it headed for a distant world. Imagination or reality? Does it matter ... just having a little fun!

Happy Weekend, folks! This image was captured a few years ago. Just rediscovered it in my library and was thrilled to give it life. Thanks to the charm of Old Auburn in Northern California, we can always find a few treasures when we visit!

Hello folks ... been awhile ... my most resilient 90 year old Mom has been in the hospital for about a week now ... she's getting better, but we are really missing her. Shouting out to the universe, for a full recovery and many more smiles and much laughter to come. Looking up ... always looking up, Mom. The biggest, longest hugs for our funny valentine.

(Sutter Creek, California, Gold Country)

Hello there Googlers! Happy Thursday, folks! ... I love it when everyday things, like old, worn out wooden doors take center stage. These made my day!

... a double take down a parking lot reveals old, warped, decaying lines ... showered with the late afternoon sun near golden hour, the textures come to life ...

Good morning Googlies! It's a cool, crispy Saturday morning here in Northern California ... Wishing y'all a terrific weekend!

Here's a capture of the historic Steamboat Slough Bridge on Highway 160 in Sacramento County, California, built in 1924. * +Steve Alfano  and I discovered it back in February on one of our leisurely drives looking for interesting things to immortalize through the lens. We had a little cloud action that day, so I kept the shutter open for 15 seconds and this is the result!*
