How are these photographs related?

This is a question posed in my book, Critique - A Path To Exceptional Photography. This Collection is filled with photographs that cross many genres - yet every single photograph is related in very specific ways to each other. And it is these elements of relationship that have guided me on my own personal quest of becoming a really good photographer.

The Collection was formed to support all photographers, regardless of their skill level, as they strive to grow their work. The principles are my road map to every shot I take.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

I see many relational aspects. Start with the elements of impact. Each image uses strong color effectively. Our eye is drawn immediately to the light. There are prominent story telling aspects to each shot. None of these photographs were taken at eye level - they use perspective well.

They are technically well done. The color balance in each is well rendered and adds quality to the photographs. The focus is appropriate - our eye is drawn in and easily finds the focal point where it can rest during exploration. These images have good balance.

The composition in each has used strong elements. They all have well defined shapes and lines. Each has a clear center of interest and everything else in the photograph contributes to the center of interest and makes it more powerful.

My book is available in either print or eBook format. Full details are available on my website at the following link:

Day Rider

The Critique:

Focused through oval lenses, this boy is mesmerizing. He compels me to look his way with his intensity. Nice exposure shows every detail and provides rich tones in all shades of gray. I like how he is anchored by the line of people who have his back. Point of focus keeps them in the background and they don’t compete with him for visual attention. His placement in the front corner leaves no doubt of his importance to the shot.

What I had learned:

Keep my camera in hand on the Muni. When I do, I’m rewarded.

Walking the Dog

The Critique:

A couple and their dog are caught in a sweep of the camera across a sunlit beach. The light dazzles and ICM bends it in the nicest of ways in this impressionistic view. Strong diagonal lines are created by light and shadow on the beach. Water cascades in, adding energy and movement. The hillsides are muted in haze and motion contributing soft textures and shapes that mimic the cloud filled sky. Bands of horizontal color create visual interest. Spatial relationships are evident. The figures, and the color red, anchor the shot and give perspective.

What I had learned:

I count my blessings when a distant figure is nice enough to wear red.

Framed

The Critique:

A frame within a frame – one couple captured with a spire from the bay bridge while another makes their escape stage left. I like the balance of the shot – how the pier structure weights the lower left of this image. It’s counterbalanced by the light tones of the larger bridge spire on the right. Water and sky gift colors and textures to frame the elements. Light is generous as it splashed on the people and gives a pleasant glow to the structures and sky. Nice textures and details. There is a strong sense of motion amplified by the double exposure. People on the move anchored solidly by structures that aren’t going anywhere.

What I had learned:

Look for interesting angles.

Maiden Lane 3

The Critique:

The dramatic perspective accentuates the patterns formed by lines and shapes. They are joined by more shapes and shadows as the reflected sunlight throws illumination across the lane. The V of a light string sends my eye soaring into the shot. I love the reds and blues against the white; the softness of the sky contrasting with the textures of the buildings. Nice vertical lines assist the feel of soaring upward. Spatial relationships are made clear by including both buildings and showing their close proximity to each other.

What I had learned.

Lean back when shooting upward and see what else shows up in the frame.

Into The Woods

The Critique:

ICM turns a solid stand of woods into a graceful dance of vertical lines and motion. Vibrant colors delight my eye as they play games of contrast - tugging warm and cool. A child darts into the scene – almost a ghost among the movement. Patterns and textures are well defined and even in its abstract form, spatial relationships are clear. Light is spectacular and sets perfect conditions for the camera motion in this image.

What I had learned:

The light caught my eye. The shapes and shadows leaned on my imagination and ICM was the decision for the shot. The child darted into the scene totally unexpected. Had I known she was there, would I have changed my mind?

Mirrored

The Critique:

Reality and reflected reality play a game of tag in this city street shot. Vertical lines in repetition sweep my eye upward and give a soaring feel to the scene. The human figures give perspective as they move among lines and shadows while creating shadows of their own. Patterns and lines add strength to the image. Stunning sunlight performs a dazzling display, especially in the reflected version suspended in the glass. Lovely winter colors are accented just a bit by the promise of warmth and the impending change of season.

What I had learned:

When windows and light line up just right, there is always opportunity for a fun shot.

Laguna de Santa Rosa

The Critique:

Moments condense; capturing a shimmering landscape scene beautifully reflected in almost still waters. Trees, stacked in time, form intricate patterns that invite exploration. A strong horizontal shoreline anchors the shot and divides a flooded meadow scene from its ethereal watery counterpart. Lush colors enrich everything. Cool and warm hues tug a bit with each other for attention creating a nice tension. Nice spatial relationships and a soft muted look of time gathered are the polishing touches.

What I had learned:

Let the shutter stay open a bit – let the camera move with the moment.

City Vibe

The Critique:

Motion conspires with light to create and impressionistic look at a simple street scene. People on the move weave through light a they navigate the city streets. Texture and ICM add rich atmosphere to the image. Soft colors, both warm and cool, give an underlying current of energy. Vertical camera motion and the tall building sweep my eye up as I investigate details. Lots of lines and patterns add interest. But it’s the people who give it perspective and life.

What I had learned:

When I work with movement, I capture more that the city’s appearance – I catch its vibe.
