Winter on the Great Salt Lake

Twilight along the edge of the Great Salt Lake. I am one who always travels with a camera and tripod on the odd chance that even on a non-photography trip I might get out. This was one of those chances. The cold, crisp morning watching getting to photograph along the lake was amazing.

Carp River and Fall Color

Peak fall color in the Porcupine Mountains of the Michigan UP. I was in Wisconsin on business one fall and had to stay over on the weekend. I drove up to the Porkies arrived on a cloudy and misty morning to catch peak fall color.

Shot on large format film (yes I would travel with a 4x5)

San Juan Fall Colors

Aspens on the mountainsides of the mighty San Juan's in southwest Colorado. This was a view from 10 years ago and one of my first digital images. I was exploring the area with friends and I was photographing with my 4x5. Along the way I was taking shots on a Canon Rebel XTi borrowed from a friend. It would be another year to buy one and 2012 before I really started to make the switch away from film.

Bright Angel Point

Sunset view from Bright Angel Point on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is 8 miles to the south rim as the crow flies but it is 200+ miles and 5 hours by car. It is a very different experience. It is 1000' (300m) higher in elevation, is cooler, has bigger trees (including aspen and blue spruce) and has a lot less people.

Here I walked from the lodge to the point and saw maybe 20 people on the trail. On the south rim it would have been 200+.

Watchman and High Water

The Watchman as seen from the bridge at Canyon Junction in Zion NP. This is the classic Zion shot. You stand on the bridge with cars going by about two feet behind you....... A good 50+ people are there every sunset.

Here is a view from a trip last year. The water was up in the river and the Narrows were closed that trip :-(

In the fall this has great color and I have also photographed the scene at night. Check out my Nightscape Photography Collection to see that take on it.

Zion Canyon

Looking down the length of Zion Canyon last week on a trip into the southwest. I spent five days exploring and photographing the park. It was clear most of the week with only clouds on my last day.

Zion Canyon

Looking up in Zion Canyon at the big sandstone walls that frame this area. This is an amazing park with amazing views. I was hiking through the valley and grabbed this shot with my fisheye to bring the whole scene into one image.

Grand Canyon Light

Fantastic light fills the Grand Canyon late in the day. Sunrise and Sunset here are an amazing show and the overlooks get very crowded.

This was a view near Yavapai Point. Sony A7R with adapted Nikon 100mm f/2.8 E Series lens

Yosemite Falls

The falls at Yosemite as shot on Scala Film. Great location and what was a classic black and white slide film. This was a positive film (not a negative) and made for some compelling images.

Salt Flats in West Texas

The Guadalupe Mountains rise above salt flats in the deserts of west Texas. Here I had wandered across the flats looking for these dried salt patterns while waiting for sunset.
