Toshimana by the window – She stands calmly, showing the special quality of  Geiko (and some senior maiko) in which their years of practice of dance and other arts, eventually becomes fully embodied. Each stance or movement is 'just so' – considered, elegant and balanced. Perhaps this skill for embodied grace is their strongest art. Image from my book Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto.

Odori Dancer - I really wanted to include some images of the stunning Odori performances by Geiko and Maiko in my book. This is a lion resting under a peony rose if I remember right.

Ayano in the studio - I am working on the final tweaking of the CMYK conversions for publication of my book: 'Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto". My aim is to have everything in place to go to print soon so that when I launch my crowdfunding campaign in January I can get books into supporters hands quickly. I will send off the second set of proofs this week. This is Ayano, a senior Geiko from Pontocho district in Kyoto, photographed during my second shoot with her for the book. This image is not actually in the book but I stumbled onto it just now and thought it would be good to share here. Ayano is a very accomplished and committed dancer and her work in the November theatre production was really outstanding. Fluidity and Stillness as the always wonderful Tsunekazu dances (accompanied by Tomitae on Koto) during the recent Gion Higashi Odori. Tsunekazu works primarily as a Jikata (shimasen player) so it is always a joy and privilege to see her marvellous dancing in these performances.

Here is the link to the book's page on my website and form to join the mail list for the launch of my book: Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto. http://robertvankoesveld.com/books/geiko/

Learning to swim? - New Geiko, Ryoka, as a fish, shows a new fish (Tsunemomo) how to swim.  Anyway that's my theory. Programs for the Odori performances are typically only in Japanese so a certain amount of guesswork is involved for non Japanese readers. The theme for this year's Gion Higashi Odori was around traditional sweets and I have an idea this dance involved a traditional sweet, shaped like a fish, dropping into the water and becoming a real one. So swimming lessons were a must.
In any case the dance  and staging was really fantastic. I went twice!
In case you are wondering, photography is usually not allowed so that everyone enjoys the performance without cameras and phones getting in the way. I was lucky enough to get special permission to photograph from a position which doesn't interfere with the audience at all.

Timeless - Maiko and Geiko from Kyoto work incredibly hard. As well as daily lessons and evening bookings 7 days a week, they also are a part of many of Kyoto's cultural activities. There are so many festivals and Shrine events in Kyoto. Here in the Jidai Matsuri Festival which covers over 1000 years of history, some Maiko and Geiko were also taking time away from demanding rehearsals for their annual Odori as well.

Visitors to Kyoto who are keen to see Maiko and Geiko should enquire if there are any of these cultural events happening or if there is a big dance  performance (Odori) being held by one of the five Kagai associations. Either is a far more fulfilling (and less intrusive) way of seeing and enjoying  Maiko or Geiko than hanging around hoping to catch a glimpse as they walk by.
