Nice hairdo

Himalayan bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogenys)

Bhutan

A bird with lovely simple vocalizations that you hear throughout Bhutan and the Himalayas and is one of 9 species in Bhutan.

You will see this common species on a prayer flag pole, a roof top, on a power line, or in a tree. Out in the open or wherever it prefers it will babble the simple notes throughout the day, and is in a way one of several familiar sounds that together is the heartbeat of Bhutan and the Himalayas.

Foraging

A brief encounter of one of the many species (12 to date) of tits in Bhutan.

It was foraging inside thickets alongside the road and was easy to see but very hard to photograph with all the branches in the way. Here it was accidentally posing for me for a very brief moment.

Making its presence known

Plumbeous water redstart (Phoenicurus fuliginosus)

Bhutan

The beautifully colored tail feathers are frequently flashed to make certain its seen by friend and foe. Foe being competing males, and friend being females.

When you pass by a river you might not notice the dark bird, but the moment it spread out its tail feather, you see the orange fan and it is quite beautiful, albeit very short lived, as it is in no way trying to be a peacock! It flashes the tail feathers in short bursts, so one must be ready to take a picture the moment it decides to open the orange fan.

King of the rock

Common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)

Bhutan

This rock is in the middle of a stream with very little water, but come the monsoon and it will flow all the way to where it is sitting and be more like a river.

This is a common species with a very large range, and is perhaps not that amazing to the people living amongst it in its core range. But one late summer I encountered one at my home in Norway, and that was an amazing experience as it is way outside its normal range. The next year it had found a mate and nested by a river on the other side of the fjord and became famous due to a frenzy amongst bird watchers resulting in articles and pictures in most of the regional newspapers: https://goo.gl/EbgW57

Common and beautiful

Red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer)

Bhutan

No matter how common a species is I love to capture them when they have positioned themselves in an aesthetic or artistic way, and this one was in no rush to leave this branch.

Bhutan has 9 species of bulbuls, so there is plenty of opportunities to capture them in beautiful locales.

Taking off

Streaked spiderhunter (Arachnothera magna)

Bhutan

A beautiful bird with an impressive beak that most definitely will reach nectar deep down the banana flowers and insects hiding deep inside nooks and crannies!

A very short encounter that I barely managed to capture before it went off to continue foraging. The encounter was so short that the GPS unit did not register the elevation before it was off. I thus had to look for another series of exposures I did close by that had the elevation recorded.

A perch in bloom

White-browed fulvetta (Fulvetta vinipectus)

Bhutan

The colorful background in this image is one of the countless inflorescences of the amazing rhododendron. I was fortunate to travel in Bhutan as the rhododendron bloom was at its best, and all the rhododendrons were attracting so many birds. And me.

Many species were feasting on the huge quantity of pollen, some for the rich nectar, and others for all the insects crawling around the flowers. The white-browed fulvetta is one such insect eater.

To the casual passerby, a blooming rhododendron is such a beauty to the eye, but go closer and you will experience a magnificent gathering of birds and insects.

When the flowers have withered there are no longer such conspicuous food sources and what you could see gathering on the rhododendrons will disperse to flower fields and smaller species of rhododendrons.

A perch with matching colors

Rufous-gorgeted flycatcher (Ficedula strophiata)

Bhutan

Sometimes a location can be silent and without a single bird sighting, and other times it can be brimming with species. Here nature offered a myriad of species for me to enjoy and I had my hands full following and capturing as many of them as I possibly could.

There were plenty of species gorging on rhododendron pollen but in the mix were species interested in a different part of the menu – like insects.

Even here out in the open its plumage blends perfectly with the colors background as well as that of the moss, lichen and wood of the decaying branch.

In a garden of spring flowers

Rufous-vented yuhina (Yuhina occipitalis)

Bhutan

This was perhaps just another spring morning here in Bhutan, but to me it was such a special time at this location. This day started with such a beautiful and colorful dawn with snowcapped mountains in the distance and a forest ablaze with flowering rhododendrons around me. And with flowers come birds – in droves!

Many birds had their face completely covered in pollen, which I suspect they will only have during the rhododendron bloom.

I tried to capture as many birds as I could with one or more rhododendron flowers in the bokeh background, but that was much harder than I expected as these birds were so energetic and busy with their morning activities.

The beautiful colors of some fading rhododendron flowers are seen as mellow pink hues in the back, which matches the hues of the branch it is sitting on as well.

In a few short weeks the hues of green will be dominating the once colorful landscape here.
