Google Fit, redesigned
As a runner and lover of pretty graphs and data, fitness tracking is something that really appeals to me. I've quite enjoyed Google Fit's Wear OS app (it had already improved a lot since the early Wear days) so I'm excited to see so much more effort being put into Google Fit.

It certainly isn't aiming for the super hardcore fitness audience (instead just having more emphasis on getting active at all), but they still have the APIs needed for third party integrations with apps like Strava and RunKeeper so that you can see your activity in Google Fit.

So excited to see this video in the wild - there's an incredible amount of work and thought behind Google Material, and it's only just begun to come to life in Google products.

What's even better: Google Material is just one possible expression of #MaterialDesign

You and your team can come up with something just as usable, cohesive, and expressive customized for your product and your user's needs πŸ€—βœ’οΈ

What I love about the updated Material guidance is that it describes foundational design principles, not just the different components we built.

Before choosing custom fonts for your app, you can learn the difference between old-style and neoclassical serifs. (https://material.io/design/typography/understanding-typography.html)

Material Theming can dynamically apply colors to your whole interface but you can also learn the basics of how color interacts with our perception and understanding of interfaces.

Custom shaped surfaces can tell a consistent story of identity, but the spec also dives into all the different things shape can mean to users.

A design system is so much more than just components, and (although I'm biased) I think Material is doing a great job of going beyond the surface level to give everyone a more holistic understanding of design.

Material's first-ever DesignLab!
https://goo.gl/BWTc7v

If you're not familiar with Google's CodeLabs, they're basically an assemblage of quick exercises you can do to get to know various bits of Google developer products and techniques. This year, for the launch of the new Material updates, I wrote our first-ever DesignLab - it's like a CodeLab, but made just for designers running Sketch πŸ™‚ It'll walk you through the basic process of creating and implementing a Material Theme in your mockups using Theme Editor.

I can't wait to make more!
