MEERKATS by internationally published author Grant Mc Ilrath The Meerkat Man is the new 240 page hard cover conservation book published in 2016. This is the first conservation book ever done on meerkats and includes two of the three currently recognised sub species.

It also discusses the conservation work of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project and The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve.

Included are three of Grant's wildlife conservation poems, with two about the world famous UNGULUNGU meerkat group and dozens of photographs. It also reveals a crash course in the complex language of meerkats including phonetic call guides for all ages to attempt to imitate - learn to understand the language of the meerkats.

The MEERKATS book can be viewed in many book stores or on the New Holland Publishers site here: http://uk.newhollandpublishers.com/meerkats.html

In South Africa in the Western Cape copies of MEERKATS can be bought from Wordsworth Books in George from the Garden Route Mall Shop No.89.

ADOPTING A WILD AND FREE MEERKAT:

Adopt a Meerkat with Gift Republic and Wildlife research biologist and professional nature conservationist Grant Mc Ilrath The Meerkat Man and The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project and help protect wild and free Meerkats living in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve, helping to protect Meerkats and their habitat since 1993: http://www.giftrepublic.com/Product.aspx?ProdID=MEERKATADOPTIT

THE MEERKAT MAGIC CONSERVATION PROJECT VISITOR INFORMATION:

Very limited tourist visits in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve are allocated so that the Wild and Free meerkats and other wildlife are not disturbed between the primary reserve focus of conservation and research observations and ongoing reserve management.

There are numerous unethical commercially focused meerkat tours being offered in South Africa now over the years (like outdoor zoos or show farms), sadly the meerkats are simply fed and tamed for tourists or kept in large enclosures or tame meerkats are released and claimed to be wild etc. I do not associate with these "tourism researchers / guides".

The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project now owns its own reserve for Meerkats and other naturally occurring wildlife to be conserved on. Additional land is required to purchase and enlarge the existing reserve and to rehabilitate into wildlife habitat from intensive and environmentally unsustainable ostrich, sheep, cattle and goat farming land usage of the past.

Now you can Watch Wild Meerkats / Suricates and Mongooses and other reserve wildlife in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, South Africa and Walk With Wildlife on a morning Sunrise Tour or afternoon Sunset Tour with Grant Mc Ilrath The Meerkat Man in his own reserve, The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project.

Have you watched any Meerkat or Mongoose films?

Now you can see wild and free Meerkats and Mongooses at The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project and experience their Meerkat Magic Moments and Mongoose Magic Moments on your unedited documentary like Tour, you can be taken behind the scenes and science.

Grant M. Mc Ilrath The Meerkat Man is your professionally qualified Nature Conservationist and Wildlife Research Biologist guide, who has been researching Wild Meerkats and other wildlife in the wilderness since 1993 and has helped with the making of numerous international Meerkat films including those with the BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel amongst others.

Formerly working with Cambridge University in Britain and the University of Pretoria in South Africa for over 7 years, with numerous international Scientific Publications to his credit, he now offers the public his unique insights into the lives of wild Meerkats and Mongooses.

In 1997 Grant began planning a Conservation Project that would be open to the international public to visit Wild Meerkats, Mongooses and other wildlife, with open source research and applied conservation and education as major objectives, and in 2004 this officially was made available for the public to experience.

The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project is mainly funded by Observe and Conserve Eco- Tourism and Agri-Tourism which is sustainable and practices alternative land usage. Conservation Through Education and Habitat Conservation are primary goals.

None of the study animals are ever fed, captured, experimented with, or handled in any way, and no intrusive research methodology or techniques are applied, there are no radio transmitters fitted.

Study animals are tolerant of Grant Mc Ilrath and any selected observers accompanying him, but the study animals are not tame, and specific guidelines must be observed in order not to disturb them on any visit.

Visiting guests help The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project with:

• conserving habitat for animals and plants

• generating funds for local, previously disadvantaged communities, who are given skills training and employment

• subsidising previous farming practices so that areas are no longer farmed on intensively

• sponsoring school presentations and other charity work

Very advanced bookings are essential. Bookings are made on a first booked first reserved basis as there are a very limited number of openings on any given Tour day.

SMS and E-mail bookings are preferred when possible.

Tragically Mongooses often get persecuted even more than Meerkats, Mongooses are frequently villainised in the media too which has a terribly negative impact on erasing ignorance and promoting conservation of the species.

Conservation Through Education is essential - for every person who tells another about the plight of Wild and Free Mongooses and their habitat loss through destroying of their sleeping burrows, pesticides on their food, and the illegal in most areas pet trade we can help conserve the Mongoose and it's habitat - all it takes is spreading the word to help achieve our goal.

This is a sister campaign of the Meerkat Magic Conservation Project, as the Tsebokolodi Mongoose group and other Mongoose species in The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve share one of their main burrows with the world famous Ungulungu Meerkat group.

Mongooses and Meerkats share many of the same habitats and therefore suffer from many of the same conservation challenges to protect them and their environments.

MONGOOSE MAGIC MOMENTS: 14 December 2017: 18:30 to sunset - Shongololo the dominant male calls to the babies when he returns to the sleeping burrow but they do not emerge yet.

Tsebokolodi the dominant female was below ground and emerged to greet Shongololo when he returned, she has fresh suckle marks again which is excellent news 😀

Impi and Mzuri both return just before sunset.

It is highly uncommon for the dominant female in Meerkats to be alone at the burrow with her babies.

This is an interesting behavioural difference between the Yellow Mongoose and Meerkat species in caring for their young.

In this image: Shongololo (left) calls to the babies in a low growl chirping sound. Impi (right) looks at the burrow entrance and rests.

INTRUSIVE WILDLIFE FIELD METHODOLOGY ("VISUAL POLLUTANTS") ARE NOT ALWAYS NEEDED FOR OBJECTIVE INDIVIDUAL RECOGNITION:

The uniquely identifiable hair pattern on the dominant male Shongololo from The Tsebokolodi Yellow Mongoose group.

The hair patterns on the dorsal and ventral side of the Yellow Mongoose tails make them uniquely and objectively identifiable for 100% accurate individual identification for research data collection I have documented.

Meerkats all have uniquely identifiable back patterns.

This illustrates that wild Meerkat and Mongoose research can be done without the need to use intrusive artificial marking methodology which is a common field research practice in wildlife observation such as docking - (cutting off body parts like ears and digits), nocking, tagging, tattooing, clipping, dying, hair cutting, hole punching and many more.

These techniques often leave permanent "visual pollutants" on wildlife in my opinion and alternative techniques should be investigated whenever possible such as uniquely identifying features that exist.

Ethical considerations such as this are of high interest to me with regards to wildlife field research methodology.

MONGOOSE MAGIC MOMENTS ORGANIC WILDLIFE FRIENDLY PRODUCE ECO-AGRICULTURAL HARMONY WILDLIFE RESEARCH: https://youtu.be/Zwil7USLVME

Wildlife Friendly Reserve Olive Trees. The trees like the vegetables are organic, no herbicides or pesticides are used and The Tsebokolodi Yellow Mongooses in particular and various other reserve wildlife, frequently include foraging routes past each tree.

The Mongooses dig dozens of holes around the tree roots as they forage for juicy Coleoptra larvae and caterpillars, crickets, termites and other invertebrates that visit the trees.

After foraging, the Mongooses often deposit dung into the dug out holes. The dung is "highly-nutritious-converted-invertebrate-compost" deposited in the holes around the tree roots.

The Mongooses are effectively grooming each tree, aerating the trees roots with all the digs and fertilising them!

The dozens of holes allow excellent water infiltration and the groomed trees grow even better and attract additional invertebrates in the future. This creates a sustainable equivalent of "rotational-invertebrate-crop-farming" by the Mongooses and is an interesting exemplar of an altruistic eco-agricultural symbiosis in action.

CONSERVATION THROUGH EDUCATION: Anybody can help spread an awareness to aid in protecting wild Mongooses for FREE:
https://www.causes.com/campaigns/106351-conserve-wild-mongooses-using-conservation-through-education
