I spent three hours hiking in Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area this morning.  I took almost 500 photos, and spent the rest of the day selecting and processing them.  Here are 12.

I just spent three hours on a winter hike in Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area.  I am seldom disappointed in the photo opportunities I get there, and today was no exception.  I took just under 500 images, and will have to spend some time with them before selecting what to post.

Carlos Avery WMA is over 16,000 acres ( about 65 square kilometers) of mostly marshland, but with significant areas of upland woods, most of that being oak savanna.  It is actively managed for waterfowl, deer, and turkey, and today's photos include images of planted food lots.

On today's hike, I saw tracks of deer, coyote, foxes, a bobcat, otters, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, and various smaller birds.  I watched a pair of red squirrels chase each other around and around a tree trunk, and had a pileated woodpecker check me out, flying around me twice before finding a faraway place.

Before I was back to the car, an ATV went silently by (silent?  ATV?  Yes!!).  It was being pulled by a pack of sled dogs.  There's not enough snow on the road for the sled's runners.  You never know what you are going to see there.

For more than six years, I have been exploring Carlos Avery State Wildlife Management Area in Minnesota.  Here are a few highlights.

Demonstration Shots  If you are looking for any artistic value here, sorry, not this time.  These were taken as "proof of capability" photos for my old, but new to me, Minolta MD mount 300mm f/4.5 telephoto.  I attach the lens to my Sony NEX-6 camera with a passive adapter (i.e. no optical or electrical elements).  The photo on the left was taken from over 1,400 feet (about 440 meters) and the one on the right from 575 feet (about 180 meters).

I think I'm going to like this lens.  Now to get a tripod worthy of holding it.
