Chasing Fall Color on Black Friday

While most people are out shopping, I am out hiking with my camera chasing fall colors.

Campsite on the Lost Mesa

Our camp on the Lost Mesa

From May of 2012 when we journeyed to the Lost Mesa to watch the Annular Eclipse. This is a wild, lonely, off the map location. There are no signs telling you how to get here, only a few unmarked gravel roads that eventually find their way here. Far beyond cell phone service, gas stations and all the things we take for granted. It was here we watched the eclipse photographing it with ancient rock art.

Photographing the Nolan River

A scene of my Gitzo tripod and Sony A7R set up photographing sunrise on the Nolan River. Fall color is in the air here in Texas and the first round of trees are showing color now. I spent the weekend exploring areas close to home chasing Autumn.

Do you explore where you live?? You should. You might be surprised by what you find.

Camping in the Ruby Mountains

My campsite a couple of weeks ago in the very Yosemite-like Ruby Mountains in Nevada. Wanting to go someplace off the beaten path, I went to the Great Basin and found this incredible location.

Glacially carved with hanging valleys, aspens, rugged rocky peaks and few people.

A true gem of a location.

Here my Marmot tent is set up for the chilly 20 degree nights.

Bonneville Salt Flats

I am sitting in the SLC airport after a week of photographing off the beaten path locations in the Great Basin.

Wanting to visit some new and different spots I spent a week driving around Nevada driving across sagebrush basins, seeing fall color in the mountains, hiking in hanging glacial carved valleys, I even hiked to a glacier. Yes, there is a glacier in a desert in Nevada. I also saw dark skies to photograph the Milky Way.

I started and ended the trip at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Here was the first morning out from SLC when I was there for sunrise. If you ever travel I-80 west bound, there is a rest area where you can walk right out on the flats.

Amazing place!! Here is my tripod set up on the salt pan.

Taken with my LG G3.

Camping in the Winter Woods

My March campsite at Bryce Canyon under the stars. It was cold that night down to around 10 degrees F (-12 C) and there was still some snow in the park. had my Marmot tent set up and stayed toasty warm in a good down sleeping bag.

Great Falls of the Clear Fork

I went out to wade in the Clear Fork this morning and photographed the Great Falls and the Clear Fork bridge.

Like many of my around town outings I was with my little Sony NEX6 kit and had my Samyang 12mm f/2 lens. I was using this on my Gitzo 1541T tripod. This is a great set up for travel, backpacking, or when I want to go a little smaller and lighter.

Zion Narrows

I just returned from a week in Zion and Grand Canyon. Over the week I had the chance to spend a day in the amazing Zion Narrows wading the Virgin River.

This is one of the best hikes in any park. You wade the cold water of the river in a very narrow and deep canyon. Here I am set you in the Wall Street area where the canyon is at some of it's narrowest. It is just a few feet wide and over a thousand feet deep

I wait for the reflected light to bounce down the canyon walls. I have my Sony A7R with Zeiss Loxia 21mm lens on my Gitzo 1348 tripod.

Zion Narrows

The Zion Narrows where Orderville Canyon meets the Virgin River. One of the best "hikes" in any park is the wading the Zion Narrows. Here the Virgin River has cut through thousands of feet of sandstone to create a very scenic canyon. You wade the cold waters of the river (sometimes waist deep) and can see amazing light.

Here I set up a selfie to give a sense of scale of how big the canyon truly is.

Inside Santa Elena Canyon

My camera set up inside Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend. I hiked into the canyon late in the afternoon to watch sunset light on the distant Chisos Mountains. I set up on a rock on the edge of the Rio Grande where Mexico is the other side of the river.

My older Canon 5D2 set up on a Gitzo 1325 tripod
