You might already have heard of the project: it's fascinating.

It's a visualization of “A”s styled in different Google fonts. Proximity in the map means similarity in shape.
The analysis has not been made by humans though, but by a neural network algorithm trained for vision pattern recognition (as far as I understand) on various samples of the string “handgloves”.

The result is impressive, but I agree that in order to be a practical tool it needs more refinement.
