The Watchman - best viewed large

Shot this a couple of years ago while wandering through the American Southwest. What an adventure. I hope to do it again early next year.

Land of the Diné; where eagles soar

This was a fun experiment.  I actually replaced the sky in this image which is something I typically don't do.  But, the sky in the original shot was so bland and boring.  So, I used +ON1 's Perfect Photo Suite 10 and one of their stock sky backgrounds to change it up a bit.  The challenge was finding a sky background with lighting that matched the scene.

Pillars of Creation II // Monument Valley, UT

I captured this scene while driving on the dirt road that meanders through Monument Valley.  Sometimes it's washed out from the rain and sometimes it's not.  I lucked out this time, as there was torrential rain the day before.  The locals were repairing the roads but I managed to skate by in my Pathfinder.

Forest Gump Point, Utah

This is one of my most favorite places to stop when road tripping through the South West.  This is also the very same spot where Forest Gump decided to stop running.  Speaking of running, you had better have your good running shoes on when photographing this location because the cars coming at you are usually doing 100+ MPH.  Fortunately, I had a spotter that would cover for me when I was taking a shot.

Calm After the Storm // Monument Valley, AZ

I arrived at this location during a torrential downpour, flash flooding, and lightning all around.  But, the short wait in the Pathfinder was worth it.  Not many photographers realize, when they're standing in this spot, that one of the great masters of our time, Ansel Adams, once stood here to capture this scene.

Life Finds a Way | Monument Valley, UT

I was very surprised at how green the desert was this past summer.  I arrived at Monument Valley during a torrential rain storm and I guess that always perks up the greenery a bit.

A note about the image:  Normally I would not split the image with the horizon line.  But, I know the rules (suggestions!) and I felt I could break them with this shot.  The composition actually follows two different suggestions -- golden spiral starting in the lower left and golden triangles.

Night Watchman / Zion NP, UT

I made a run to Zion National Park this summer and captured The Watchman. What an amazing national park. This was my first visit and I must say it was a bit overwhelming.  I just have to laugh a bit.  I was sitting in my hotel room perusing G+ when I ran across a similar photo shot by +Derek Kind.  I was all, "Dude, where is this spot in Zion?  I'm here right now".  I also recall it was on a wordless Wednesday.  LOL  The sun was setting and no time for a reply and so I headed out.  I drove into the park and noticed about a dozen photographers lined up on a bridge looking at... something, but what?  I turned to look and there it was... The Watchman.  Miracles never cease.

Hall of the Giants II

I haven't posted in a while.  Here's a little something I was working on today.  I captured this scene during sunrise.  Love the glow coming off the distant hoodoos.
