Living With Anxiety (http://bit.ly/2g1HR5d)

#Anxiety is a mental condition that can affect all aspects of a persons life. According to the National Institute of Mental Health anxiety disorders are some of the most common mental illnesses.

In fact anxiety disorders affect 18% of Americans each year.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month the newspaper Gambit spoke to seven young people who suffer from anxiety to share their stories.

Here are some key points from the article about how anxiety affects people’s everyday lives:

A cluster of emotional and physical symptoms characterize anxiety disorders. Many of them are centered around worry, but there also are less obvious symptoms, such as "blanking out" in conversation, trouble concentrating, gastrointestinal distress or even excessive sweating.

Anxiety can change the way you approach everyday activities. The subjects of these interviews said that anxiety has altered the way they make decisions, what they do on a given day and how they interact with other people.

Couples Therapy Makes You Better Co-Parents (http://gplnk.us/2gWh8rj)

#Couples #therapy is often discussed as a great way to work through small issues in a relationship. However does couples therapy work after a couple have ended their relationship?

According to an article on Romper it does!

Things can be tricky once a couple have made the decision to end their relationship if they have children together. This is where couples therapy can be a really great way for both parents to work through issues and ways to co-parent effectively.

Here is some more information from the article about why couples therapy can make for better co-parenting:

When considering how hard it can be to maintain a relationship after the decision to split, co-parenting is an even more difficult addition to the situation. It can sometimes create more frustration and barriers when bringing stepparents into the mix.

Additionally, the quality of the interaction between co-parents can have a major impact on the mental and emotional well-being of children. So after a split, working through relationship issues to co-parent mutually is essential, and one of the primary tools to doing so is couples counseling.

No one likes waking up in a cold sweat after having a #nightmare. However normally a person brushes off a nightmare as nothing to worry about.

Now a new study is saying that if you commonly have nightmares it might be something to pay attention to.

The new study found that frequent nightmares could be a warning sign about a person’s mental health. The study was carried out between 1972 and 2012 and surveyed 71,068 participants in Finland. The Independent reported on the study and the key findings that the researchers found:

The study defines nightmares as “intensive dreams with negative emotional tone”. It was found that these frequent distressing nightmares can increase the risk for mood disorders and suicide both amongst the general population and frontline World War II veterans.

There's a Crisis in Psychiatry (https://gplnk.io/2nZm7L2)

And we mean for both #patients and #psychiatrists. Experts monitoring the industry report there is a severe shortage of psychiatrists being experienced in the United States. This is alarming in an environment where access to quality mental health care is already limited.

The National Council Medical Director Institute, an advisor to the National Council for Behavioral Health, released their findings in a report titled, Psychiatric Crisis: Causes and Solutions.

As you might be able to tell by the title, there are a wide-ranging set of reasons for the shortage and solutions for the declining population of quality, licensed psychiatrists in the United State. MedScape published an article recently describing more:

Furthermore, approximately 55% of counties across the United States currently have no psychiatrist, and 77% report a severe shortage – a situation that is partially due to an increase in demand.

"People want psychiatric services. They know treatment works, and it's less stigmatizing than it used to be, so people are more willing to accept and seek treatment," said Dr Parks.

But their search is often in vain. Two thirds of primary care physicians report having trouble getting psychiatric services for patients, so patients often end up in the emergency department.
