Teaching the World about Australia

In November 8, 2011, I shared an article that I called "Be it ever so humble". It was a map of my home, Australia - the one that I am resharing now.

That post itself wasn't anything special in my eyes. It got a total of 7 Comments, 7 +1s and 4 Reshares - that wasn't so bad, but it did something far more important as well. It gave me an idea.

The idea was to share more things about Australia to the G+ World, showing you all the unique little things that this country great.

I've now created many more posts in this series. Here they all are - this is my way of Teaching the G+ World about Australia

No, this isn't a dildo!

You people disgust me. No, really.

This isn't some weird form of sexual pleasure device. No, instead, it's one of a collection of Australia's newest beasties!!!

A month-long expedition off Australia's coast has returned with a whole new collection of the weird and wonderful from the deepest, darkest depths of the abyss.

You can see the rest of the slimy critters that were caught by clicking here ->

I, for one, welcome our slimy overlords.

This is why I hate cats

And it's not even Caturday

I've shown you before how Australia looks like Scooby-Doo (goo.gl/GgzvSO) and, of course, the Cat's Head/Dog's Head combo (goo.gl/2EKjDX), but this is taking mapping to a whole new level.

Australia - the world's play thing.

A complete guide to Australian wildlife

By an actual Australian!

The fauna of Australia is oft-discussed, with topics ranging from how deadly they may be are to how cute and cuddly they appear to be. As always, these discussions tend to be from tourists and do not tend to have a truly Aussie slant.

I thought I'd give it the #AboutAustralia once-over. Because, well, why not.  So, here's a look at some of the critters we have roaming our streets.

Koala
- They look cute and cuddly but they're also kinda scary.
- NOT AN ACTUAL BEAR
- They sleep for half the day (mostly because they're stoned on Eucalyptus
- The sounds they make are terrifying, it's been likened to Satan possessing a strangled, half-dead cat
- If you call them "koala bears", thousands of us Aussies will beat you up with our cricket bats.

Kangaroo
- These guys will break bones
- They have killed people
- They aren't called Boxing Kangaroos for nothing

Dingoes
- They look like dogs but be warned, they are pretty much like wolves and will kill you
- We use "a dingo ate my baby" as basically our version of the boy who cried wolf
- A woman (Lindy Chamberlain) said one ate her baby but no one believed her

Magpies
- Run
- If you go near them in mating season, they WILL attack you
- They smell fear
- Aussies have been known to wear plastic containers on their heads to protect themselves from Magpies. I'm not even kidding.

Funnel-Web Spider
- One of the most poisonous spiders in the world
- The most dangerous in Australia
- They're super shy and won't attack unless you pick a fight with them
- These are the spiders of your nightmares

Emus
- The Great Emu War. Google it. I'll wait.

Crocodiles
- Nobody has seen one in the wild and survived
- Well, nobody except Steve Irwin (RIP mate)
- If you see one and you want to live then too bad, you're already dead.

Possum
- The only Australian animal that won't kill you
- They eat any food you leave laying around
- Not related to the Australian Bin Chicken (https://goo.gl/LDfckz)

So, there you have it. That's all you need to know.

Flat-Earthers

For the LOLz

Take a minute out of your day and watch the video at the link below.

It shows some of the "evidence" presented by 'Flat Earthers' as to why we should ignore the facts, forget about science, and shun those awful, awful liars at +NASA

I just love that Australia gets a mention at the end. Because, as I've already proven here (https://goo.gl/lV8aQ8), it's really not that easy living in The Lucky Headache Country

Bear in mind, these are just some of their reasons given by the Flat Earthers. If you're looking for an actual challenge to hard science, from the fact that different points on the planet experience day and night at the same time, or the Coriolis effect, to the round shadow of Earth on the Moon, well you've come to the wrong place. Funnily enough, these idiots have neglected to explain these things.

Australia to ban convicted paedophiles from travelling abroad

Lock up your sons and daughters!

In what's reported to be a world first, the Australian Government will introduce new laws to "make Australia a world leader in protecting vulnerable children from child sex tourism by prohibiting registered child sex offenders from leaving Australia or holding Australian passports."

Whilst I applaud the move, what it doesn't say is what the Government is doing to bring back those involved in paedophile activities but then run and hide in the Vatican once the long arm of the law starts to close in on them.

Rare Map of Australia

Found in a home in Italy!

This little gem, one of the earliest maps of Australia, has been found in a home in Italy. Being almost 450 years old, it's still in pretty good shape but really goes to show how good the Dutch were at mapping Terra Australis

The map is going up for auction at Sotheby's

According to Sotheby's, the map is "possibly the best general map of Dutch sea power executed in the 17th century. It contains all Dutch discoveries in Australia and those in Tasmania and New Zealand of Tasman's first voyage".
