This is the first known painting of Sagunto, the Castle and the Roaman Theatre
It was done by Anton van den Wyngaerde (Amberes, 1512/1525 – Madrid, 1571). a sixteenth century Flemish landscape cartoonist, who toured Spain from 1561, drawing a collection of 62 detailed and meticulous views of towns and cities, commissioned by the king, Philip II until his death on May 7, 1571.

José Romeu and Parras (Sagunto, 1778 - Valencia, 1812) was a guerrilla fighter from Sagunto during the War of Spanish Independence

After being captured by French troops, he was taken to Valencia, where +Governor Suchet* expected him to come over to the French cause, influencing his fellow citizens and thus achieve peace in the province. In vain the Governor of Valencia, sent emissaries to convince him. Romeu indignantly replied, "Tell your general that Romeu is a Spaniard, and a Spaniard born in Sagunto"

On June 12th 1812, in the market square of Valencia, Romeu was hanged at the age of 34, leaving his wife and 3 children in abject poverty and misery.

This statue was erected in his memory in the main square of Sagunto

For all you lovers of classical guitar music, this is the adagio from the Concierto de Aranjuez played by Paco de Lucía. The music was written by Joaquín Rodrigo, who was born in our town of Sagunto in 1901.
This is probably his most famous piece. Miles Davis, Deep Purple and Led Zepplin, amongst many others, have used this piece in their music.

Drinking vessels made from cork, popularly known as "colchos" or "colchas", are the most distinguished craft products from Sagunto Their production, from the bark of cork trees, follows techniques that have been present in the municipality for centuries.
The cylindrical form is achieved by fastening metal hoops around the sheet of cork, which are later adorned.
In spite of the fact that their current function is decorative, years ago they served the purpose, with great success, of keeping water fresh and cool for both wayfarers and farmers.
Currently, this artisanry is created in the Taller del Centro Ocupacional "San Cristóbal", where a group of psychologically disabled people and their specialised trainers elaborate new colchos and restore antique furniture

Easter Holy Week in Sagunto
Did you know that the Easter Week Procession in Sagunto is 500 years old?
From the late fifteenth century to the present day, the Brotherhood of the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ Purisima commemorates the passion and death of Jesus Christ, one of the oldest in Valencia and the rest of Spain.

Roundabouts in Spain Nº 4
As promised, the roundabout at the entrance to Sagunto itself. A wonderful grass mound, topped with a Roman column dedicated to Publius Scipio, the Roman general who defeated Hannibal at the end of the *Second Punic War (218 BC - 202 BC)

The Siege of Sagunto was the first battle in this war. The city held out against Hannibal for 8 months. When beaten, the people were offered the chance to leave just in the clothes they stood up in. They refused, and every adult was put to death

No wonder the plinth is dedicated to Hannibal's nemesis!
