Little Egret

From a fair while ago. Little Egrets were feeding in a small group. This one, in particular, was "flat out" chasing fish and catching them. Managed to strike a few poses while it was feeding.

Splendid Fairy-wren

Last one for #BirdWeekend. Walking back to the car after seeing the Yellow-billed Spoonbill et al, this little male Splendid Fairy-wren was "driving" itslef crazy chasing the "other" male off. Made a few images of the "little guy" - not the strongest image but it was interesting watching him as we got closer to the car. Thanks for organising this, +Heidi Anne Morris! Wonderful idea! 8-))

Yellow-billed Spoonbill

Wasn't going to go out this afternoon, but took my family with me for a short walk. Got "smashed" by the mosquitoes! But it was great being out and about. Saw some antics from a few Pacific Black Ducks again and a few Eastern Great Egrets as well.

Pacific Black Ducks

Quick trip to the Estuary with my son. A nearly five year old was in awe of what he was watching. That was beautiful to see.

Eastern Great Egret - Silhouette

Early morning. Hot morning over the Estuary. A number of Eastern Great Egrets were feeding and chasing each other (as they do). Beautiful morning.

You Hear That...

'You can hear that, can't you? Splendid Fairy-wren. Sounds like he is moving away from us."

"You're right. It is. But it sounds like there is more than him. Could be 3 or 4 by the sounds of it. Wonder if he will hang around until we get out of here?"

"Well, if it means you increase this glacial pace that you are setting, we might. But if the Polar Bears end up here, then now he won't. The good news though, is that if the Polar Bears do turn up, we won't need to worry!"

"Humour! I understand that. Don't know if I agree, but I do understand. We'll ge there. It is a little difficult when you have sand and bites in place you wish you didn't though. But, hey, we're all men here aren't we?!"

"Sure. Whatever you say boss. Just keep that in mind when those walkers get close enough to see the "man" pointing his camera at the "pretty blue bird" on the branch. How manly are you going to feel then!?"

"All good to be honest. The bird maketh the man or thereabouts. We'll see. I just wish the itching would stop. You could have told me they were ants that we laid down in. But no! Kept it to yourself. Oh well..."

"He's there. Watching you. He's on the path. Hurry up, man. You're slower than a wet week."

"Okey dokey. Got it. No, I don't. He's moved again. Up to the branch, I hope. He is! Light is interesting. Should look good when it's processed."

"You do really go on, don't you. Time to go, I think. They have moved on now. Let's get home. Breakfast might be a good idea. We've been up for 5 hours already. Let's go."

And, so ended the most amicable trip "they've" had in awhile. Quite strange really, but you take the wins when you get them, with those two!

We There Yet...

"You know what happened last time we walked through here. We got stuck. Like, a lot. Like, heaps. Stuck so much that you lost a shoe for a moment. I thought I was going to have to call the Police helicopter to haul us out of here. Like, that stuck!"

"I know. But it was fun. To hear you moaning and carrying on. I thought you were never going to stop. It went on and on. Much like I am now. You like it?"

"No. Not really. It was like listening to a stuck record. It wouldn't stop. And so..."

"That's right! It is like a stuck record. The beauty is that while I went on and on and distracted you from yabbering, we are here! Where you said we wouldn't be!"

"Again, you are right. That's twice in one day! How did you do that? That must be a record. Twice! I can't believe..."

"Please, for the love of all things fluffy and white, be quiet. Just watch them. There's 12 Yellow-billed Spoonbills feeding. We haven't seen that many out here for a fair while. So, just be quiet and watch them."

"..."

"What's wrong? You're very quiet."

"..."

"Oh. I get it. I upset you. Now you won't talk. Well, okay. Suit yourself. But, you know I love hearing you moaning and carrying on. It's not the same without your incessant chatter in my ears."

"..."

"Seriously! Nothing! You aren't..."

"They're going to take off. Stop talking and make some images!"

"You're right! They are! Nice work! See what happens when you stop talking? You see things! The biology! You see it!"

"..."

"Oh for goodness sake. Chin up! We have to get back through the mud now."

That was about as happy as they were while we were out a couple of days ago. Plenty to see. Plenty of Spoonbills, Egret, Terns, Ibis, Black Swans and Gulls. Plus the odd White-faced Heron, Splendid Fairy-wren, Willie Wagtail and Silver-eyes. The Spoonbills fed for a long time in a small "lagoon" in fairly shallow water. Kept the Ibis on their toes and the Egrets. It is fascinating to watch them feed and wonder how and why their bills are shaped the way they are.

Smooth...

"The water is so smooth. I haven't seen it like this for a long time. There's always some ripple action. Today, there is nothing. Any ideas?"

"I'm a photographer. Not a scientist. I don't know. It could have something to do with the 35 degrees Celsius at 0638 without a breath of wind. It could be the low tide. But, I'm not a scientist. I have no idea!"

"I wish the White-faced Heron would get out of the way though. It looks like one of them is growing out of its back! They haven't been anywhere near each other and now we can make some images, they decide to hangout! What gives?"

"So, I told you I wasn't a scientist. Do I need to repeat myself? I have no idea. Maybe its the weather or stars or luck or...how do you do this? You suck me in every time! I hear you, have no idea and then still answer! Argh...."

"We" did see the Heron walk in the other direction. Left the Yellow-billed Spoonbill on its own. The reflections were unreal and the light clear. Every bird that was around left reflections just like this. And, it was hot. Even in the water, it was hot! But, no complaints...

Do You Feel That...

"Did you feel that?"

"What?"

"Your butt. It's wet. That's what!"

"I did! So?"

"So, what?"

"What?"

"So, what? What are you going to do?"

"Nothing. Probably sit down in it even more! Wet is wet! Can't get wetter than wet. Besides, you're focusing on your butt when we have these Egrets in front of us? I don't get you sometimes. You've never seen this before and you're worried about your butt. Whatever will we do?"

"Was that sarcasm?"

"Noooooo!"

"It was, wasn't it? You're messing with my mind! Stop it! Just get on with it!"

"You are a little unhinged you know that don't you. One minute you're complaining about the wet butt and now you're telling me to get on with it! A little unhinged!"

Before it spirals out of control (well, anymore than it has), it was a glorious and a little on the lucky side, morning. I went to a regular spot, saw some Pelicans and Gulls and that was it. Left that spot earlier than I intended to and had a choice of two ways home. Took the estuary "scenic route" home. Saw a person standing out in the middle of the estuary (had to be a photographer - no one else would have been crazy enough to do that) and then realised there were Egrets everywhere. It was unreal. So, of course you stop, drag your gear into the water, try to avoid putting your rear end into the water, then forget what you are trying to do (keep your rear dry) and sit yourself right in it! What to do then? Make more images and pray you remembered the towels!

They're Coming...

"They are moving this way. Be quiet! You'll scare them with your incessant chatter! Do you even take a breath? I can't even get a word in because you keep talking..."

"You know you sound a little "unhinged", don't you? All this chatter you go on with is driving me a little "batty". Yes, they are feeding this way. They know we are here so just lay still and keep quiet."

"That light sure is beautiful! Don't you think?"

"I try to. Not always succesfully but I try to!" And yes, again, it is. Now shoosh!"

"Again with the shoosh! What's with the shoosh all the time? You'd think you were talking to someone who keeps talking...oh. I do. I'll shoosh now and watch."

"You know, sometimes it takes some time, doesn't it? It takes time for you to really get in the swing of things. But, we will sort it out. Now, just watch them and enjoy. One of them is just outstanding!"

So, they did "shoosh". Made some images, got in the zone, filthy dirty, wet and cold, but very happy. The Black-winged Stilts fed straight up to me and passed me close enough to touch them. No fear or nervousness. It was a special moment to be so close to a couple of, normally, skittish birds. They fed like crazy which is probably why they fed straight up to me. Beautiful birds.
