Today in the U.S. is a holiday: "Columbus Day"

In New York there is some controversy about the statue which is in the center of "Columbus Circle" in Manhattan, on top of a very tall pole.

For me when I look now I am reminded of this statue - in Moscow! I heard many arguments and jokes - not so much about the history, but people say it is ugly. (Some enjoy it. It tells a story.) It is said to be the 8th largest statue in the world.

Short version: To make a statue of Christopher Columbus more acceptable for Russian display, his head was removed by the artist (Tsereteli) and now by magic this became Peter the Great. Still the statue received little love.

Controversy everywhere about Columbus statues!

Kazan Cathedral by daylight

Here's the view of the front of this beautiful building, nearby to the iconic St. Basil's, in Red Square. I tried to take several angles beyond the usual postcard images, both day and night. I'd posted a close shot of the front doorway and murals recently, and one of my favorite images (below) is at night, with this lit up in a surreal purple light. This is the front in bright daylight, with winter-white sky.

Monastery of the Epiphany

Near Red Square, just off Nikolkyka Street, opposite the Ploshcad Revolyutsil Metro entrance, this is the second oldest monastery in Moscow, founded by Daniil Alexandrovich, the first Prince of Moscow in 1296. Built in "Naryshkin baroque" style, it is a dominant feature of the skyline - along with St. Basil Cathedral - seen easily from the Moskva River.

Included in its long history - along with renovations, war, and fire: In the 17th Century (1685) monks from Greece established a school here, which taught the Greek language, grammar, poetics, rhetoric, logic, and other sciences.

No longer serving as a monastery, and hemmed in by many other buildings which have risen around it, today it serves as a parish church. Now preserved and protected, this remains a stunning part of the Moscow skyscape.

GUM - ГУМ

An institution and historic collection of arcades, restaurants and shopping emporiums, along with a cinema and royal toilets and seasonal displays. The official state store through the Soviet era, this is their flagship store in Red Square. This is from winter 2014, a celebratory time with Sochi Olympics underway, along with winter holidays.

As the lights show, this was also GUM's 120th Anniversary.

Inside there were Sochi bobsleds and other themed exhibits.
(Much warmer inside, too.)

Kazan Cathedral, Red Square

This is the foreground church seen in this collection's main image, and below, in a stunning night-light, with the Kremlin behind - and the iconic St. Basil's Cathedral just out of this frame, nearby. So here is a closeup with daylight details, of Kazan Cathedral's front entrance.

Domes of Terem Palace

Inside the Kremlin, the original base of the Tsars' Palace (later named Terem Palace) was built in 1499-1508. The first stone quarters were built in 1635-1636 for Tsar Mikhael Fyodorovich. With the interior restored in the 1960's in original 17th Century style, today this remains a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace complex, official residence of the President of the Russian Federation.

Baby it's cold outside!
But very pretty, too, in the crisp winter light.

Another image of St. Basil's Cathedral from exactly 3 years ago today.
And one more angle on this amazing visual feast - a main reason I was intent on visiting Red Square.

Good morning, Moscow.
Here is an image from exactly 3 years ago today.

This view is from the Kremlin entrance, looking here at Vodovzvodnaya Tower, a church, Central Moscow, and a bridge over the frozen Moscow River.
