Creativity, Process & Creative Process At Work
Binding Threads

Creativity and the creative process are recognized as sterling motivators and known to be critical factors in much if not all of the work we do. Yet even though there are theories and explanations of how they are understood to function, they’re still rendered somewhat invisible, lurking quietly waiting to be uncovered, illusive and undefined in many cases. Their life and breadth is both conscious and unconscious and that may make them difficult to track, define and to power up. Especially to those not trained in creative disciplines. But uncomplicated, basic processes can also lead us to creative thinking no matter what our training has been.

Here’s what got me thinking about this- I asked myself recently what it is that I love most about the simple activity of work and combined with that the work of creating content, one of the more tangibly creative activities that engages me in my job. Also my work with clients on tapping into their creative thinking for their website content has me thinking on this.

The answer to my personal question came with a realization that it’s basic process and not only overtly creative process that teases me forward with a craving to do more, to work harder and more effectively. It quite literally makes me want to work to know, in advance, that I will become engrossed in process once I begin. Its beguiling, preoccupying charm is like a carrot tempting a hungry rabbit.

What About Humility?

What brings you to your knees? What demands that you say “I don’t know”? When do you really listen to what others and even your opponent or your debate “partner” has to say? How often do you question your own knowledge, your own willingness to change or to shift an opinion? What circumstances lead you to surrender? What does it take? To have some humility?

Our tolerance of uncertainty, not knowing, being able to assign greater knowledge to others, admit mistakes and have the ability to remain flexible and receptive when our minds are screaming “But I’m right” all have something in common and that’s humility.

No need to dig in our heels and make declarations that we know all. We don’t. And the benefits of not knowing everything and knowing that we don’t, far outweigh whatever protection we think our ideas need. We can drop the defenses. Such a relief!

Listening Is A First Step. Trust Is Another.

Trusting ourselves. Trusting in a situation. Trusting another person. Trusting that something useful might emerge when we let down our defenses. Trusting that time will unfold something unexpected and likely fortunate. Those instances all lend us the strength to be humble. Yes, the strength.

Tidbits:
This post was inspired by a Hangout on Air on Google Plus (https://goo.gl/vRfn34) hosted by +DENNIS N. DUCE  (and +Stephanie Sims  in absentia) with guests +David Amerland, +Teodora Petkova which I highly recommend you watch, and a couple of recent articles from +Rand Fishkin  including this one on negative “self-talk” (https://goo.gl/TMK4tx).

Observe, Accept & Utilize Emotion In Business
Find The Happy Spot

I'm inspired this afternoon by reading a piece from +David Amerland (https://goo.gl/o2fRdU) to share this article, written (by me) in June 2015, again.

In David's article, "Is Your Business Emotional?" , he makes a compelling case for success via feelings of happiness and satisfaction of your customers and the people who work within your organization.:

"How does it feel doing business with you? Really?"

"How does it feel working for your business? Really?"

In order to answer those questions truthfully, it may take some soul searching and a willingness to confront potentially complicated or difficult emotion.

Please read his piece for yourself, but he goes on to say it's the secret to success.

And... One of the cool things about feelings (and emotion) is that there are essentially endless opportunities to take advantage of allowing them to inform and be integrated into the client/customer experience, into our businesses and our expression of what it is we do, why and how we do it.

No Better Time To Think About This
Ubuntu: I am because of you.

From the Nguni Bantu languages of Southern Africa.

We need a collaborative spirit. Not only in business. In how we live.

Apply Ubuntu to your daily interactions, your work efforts, your business culture and environment and suddenly the light changes in the room. It becomes brighter. Possibility expands, as does mood. We are in this together.

Fire Up Your Collaborative Spirit In Your Work
What Do We Mean To Each Other?

The art of collaboration has its origins built in to being human, woven with an awareness of how important we are to each other; the natural interdependence that exists between people and all the systems we create and are created by. Vitalize your ability to join forces, team up, listen and act upon the ideas of others. Share effort. Step back and let someone else lead and then trade places.

True collaboration benefits all involved and ripples outward. Identity. Collaboration. Everyone matters. Ubuntu.

Your Personal Inventory- What Makes You Who You Are?

Have you ever tried to sort through your personal inventory of attributes, feelings and actions in an effort to see yourself as somehow magically separate from those you’ve interacted with throughout your day, months, years?

Or made an attempt to step to the side of the mysterious equation of daily life with other people even just for a moment? Tried to get to the bottom of who you really are on your own with no input or history of others in your life? Imagine yourself untied to any influence or need of other humans. It’s not an easy exercise and undoubtedly, it’s one that will ultimately fail beyond a few details here and there.

We are relational, connected to each other.

When we embrace the realization that we rely on each other, buoy each other, benefit from each other and can foster our collaborative spirit and collaboration in the small places and in the big places throughout our day, we will almost always improve whatever it is we’re doing. And ourselves along the way.

Collaborative Spirit: Embrace The Realization That We Rely On Each Other
I Am, Because Of You

We affect each other in ways that may forever remain unseen to us. But they still figure in. In the same fashion that others’ actions and words reverberate in us, ours do in others.

We may never get to fully know how our actions and words challenge or inspire, influence or agitate someone into exploring something further, testing themselves to try something new or unfamiliar, daring to because of what we or someone else did or said. Maybe from a brief glance or touch that seems insignificant to us. Yet it’s pretty much something we can count on. Our impact is real.

We model for each other, we set examples, we lead and we follow, we teach

“I am, because of you.”

This is the meaning and the heart of Ubuntu, from the Nguni Bantu languages of Southern Africa. This is how Boyd Varty describes it in his TED Talk in 2013.

Apply Ubuntu to your daily interactions, your work efforts, your business culture and environment and suddenly the light changes in the room. It becomes brighter. Possibility expands, as does mood. We are in this together.

Bring Your Personal Brand To Your Business

Here's an origin story that went into the shaping of our business and its character. It illustrates the point I'd like to make about Personal Branding and its importance in business:

Let's start with the premise that it can be challenging to start a business and settle into its personality - to grow its character. And that it’s even harder to commit to and follow through on making it genuine to who you really are and will be as a business and to continue doing so regularly. No matter the size or stage of development.

Here's A Key

Some skip over the things that are there from the outset right under our noses - that’s what we personally bring to the company. Who we are.

What I have found, working with small business, is that owners don’t quite get that their personal brand, who they are, their values, interest, personal identity is a critical part of the picture to building a business that has soul.

That might sound too touchy feely to some, but it’s not. After all people are attracted to doing business with people. Heart, soul, passion, purpose, a clearly defined “why” … whatever you want to call it, is what will attract people to your business.

Learn To Infuse Your Business Identity With Your Personal Brand
It's More Important Than You May Think

Starting from scratch when conceiving who your business will be and how your personal brand fits into the picture, developing its business identity (and in parallel, your online identity), can feel like this. dropping a tiny marble into the sea from a plane and hoping it will roll up onto the sand at the beach from where you took off.

Not only that but hoping it will happen while you’re watching and that its bright colors will make it easy to spot from the air. Impossible.

But we all know that it’s not because, well, the world is made up of businesses that have clearly defined identities. Their personality, good qualities, values and value are readily apparent, their brightness easy to spot from a distance. Everyone starts from somewhere. They had to have a talent for mining those qualities and bringing them to the surface (or the beach).

That’s the fanciful way of saying it’s hard to start a business and settle into its personality - to grow its character. It’s even harder to commit to and follow through on making it genuine to who you really are and will be as a business and then to continue doing so regularly. No matter the size or stage of development.

The origin of this article and the original version of the story I have written within it comes from a share I wrote for a @115620878851836664537 Sunday Read a couple of weeks ago.

Summon Your Personal Brand To Breath Life Into Your Business Identity

The personal experiences that shape us, can and will, in turn, shape our businesses. They inform and infuse who we become and who we want to be moving forward. This is something we can embrace rather than try to work against.

The autobiographical story you’ll read in this article - a travel back in time - was originally triggered by an inspiring +David Amerland Sunday Read, Network.

I’ve enjoyed re-working it to put it into this container to examine what, how and why I am doing the work I do and how our business is infused with my own true nature.

One more thing- while I was writing the piece, +Mark Traphagen happened to revisit and repost, in his words, a "heavily edited" article of his from the past and in it I found a gem to include in mine that beautifully encapsulates the sentiment I am trying to achieve and the ideas I am trying to impart.

Wait! One more! +Teodora Petkova, I hope this begins to satisfy your craving for more. :)

Your Company Narrative Reflects Inward & Ripples Outward

We aren’t riding solo through this life or in the work we do. We’re in it together. Everything we intend and do can be traced forward or back to connection of some sort. Responses to the environment and the people who populate it; those we come in contact with, our customers and clients. Those we create our stories with, work with and play with. All of our experiences hopefully, lead to a shared purpose.

When we step back and take a look, things come into focus. We can see what we’re hoping to achieve, get a glimpse at our narrative and learn how to distill its essential parts and articulate what it is whether it is the narrative of our life or of our business. We see which stories stand out, what our objectives are. What our aspirations are made of.
