The unique and incredible Trolltunga, Norway

Sometimes you have to live life on the edge! For this early morning photo shoot, it was a very literal edge… Trolltunga (the Troll’s Tongue) hovers 700m above the lake below, and had my heart pumping as I crept towards one of the most unique cliff tops I’ve seen. It’s a solid 6 hour hike up to the top of the mountain over some difficult and frozen terrain (we went as winter was kicking in – naughty us). We decided to hike up to Trolltunga in the afternoon and pitch a tent on top of the mountain and stay the night. As winter had just started to arrived, the top area of this mountain was covered in snow. I can’t describe how freezing it was that night, and got down to below -10 degrees celcius. But having the sunrise all to ourselves the next morning, made all the pain the previous night worth while. One of the most memorable mornings I’ve had.

Hidden Pyramids in Guatemala

Here's a pic of me exploring some of Guatemala’s pristine national parks. You can occasionally stumble across something unexpected, and amazing! Of course, I knew there were pyramids in the area, I was exploring Tikal :-P However, when you're aimlessly walking through the jungle all alone, and you stumble upon something like this. It's an incredible feeling. Standing alone with the pyramid, with no one else around and just the sounds of the jungle to accompany me, it felt like I had been transported back to another epoch. A really unique experience.

Mountain of Ice at Everest Base Camp

21 days trek in the Khumbu and Everest region in northern Nepal was fantastic. Part of that high altitude trek was to drop in on the Everest Base Camp. That whole area is pretty spectacular! You can even stumble across mini ice mountains, such as the one in the photograph above.

I took a stroll down a small stream of glacial melt-water to do some photography, and came across this interesting scene. The mountain in the back isn’t actually Everest (that’s just off screen to the left of the camera), but one looking back down the valley.

It’s a very alien environment, up there.

Amazing sunrise over Mount Bromo

I stand at sunrise on the rim of an ancient volcano, gazing over it's caldera to a series of 4 smaller active volcanoes within it's interior. A truly impressive site!

This entire scene looks like it's been computer generated for some sci-fi movie. But, it's real and it's absolutely stunning.

The active volcano you can see on the left, actually erupted only three weeks prior to me taking this photograph and was in high alert status, ready for another eruption. Naturally we had to climb up to it's rim and look down into it's caldera :-P Up close, it was raining ash and we got absolutely covered in it.

Among the clouds in the Himalayas...

Towards the end of my 21 day trek in the Khumbu and Everest region, in northern Nepal. It was sad to turn my back to some of the worlds most beautiful scenery, and move onward, back to Lukla. I was very warn out and ready to get warm, kick my feet up and enjoy a cold beer. But one thing I wasn't ready for, was turning my back on those mountains. They really are something else.

This was my last sunset deep in the Himalayas… I can’t wait to get back among the clouds!

Someone recently asked me, "what's your favourite image?"...

Immediately my mind went wandering through all the landscape images I've taken over the years. But if I'm absolutely honest about it, I would potentially say that it's not a landscape, but a shot of a female Mountain Gorilla. Why? Well, it encapsulates probably the most amazing experience of my life. Spending over an hour with a family of 6 Mountain Gorillas in the Impenetrable Jungle, Uganda.

Already multiple months deep in eastern Africa, we finally hitch hiked our way into Uganda. A several hour ride on the most insane 4WD track, brought us to the Bwindi Impenetrable Jungle. Eventually we met our trackers who we’d be communicating with, and two Guards armed with AK47′s (bordering the Congo, this jungle isn’t the safest place on earth, and there are many wild elephants in the area also). In the morning we set off and spent three and a half hours climbing straight up this mountain, following our tracking guide as he hacked our way through the most insanely dense jungle with machetes (a crazy amount of effort actually), getting bitten over by fire ants, which their bite still burned over a day later. Eventually reaching the mountain peak, where we met what we were there for; a family of six Mountain Gorillas, including the Silverback that weighs up to around 250kg’s and stands up to 2 metres tall. His arms were as thick as my torso! Seeming though he was the first we encountered, it was a very daunting initiation into the experience.

But despite how utterly huge and powerful these amazing animals are, they truly are the most placid and peaceful creatures on the planet. They have absolutely no intention to cause harm and let us get within a metre or two of them. We spent over an hour with this playful family, following them around the area, just sitting with them, watching them eat and play. This hour and a half has become one of my favourite experiences in life. The memory of kneeling within 2 metres of the silver back (no, not joking) and staring straight into his eyes, with him staring straight back at you … I can’t ever describe how that felt!

Paradise in Panama

On the southern Caribbean coast of Panama sits an array of beautiful islands, with colourful villages and dirt roads that you can explore on a scooter. White sand, turquoise Caribbean waters, palms overhanging the water. Yeah, these beaches deliver some of the most idyllic beaches you can imagine.

On this particular day we had been exploring Isla Colon (Colon island) all day long with a couple of scooters we hired from Bocas del Toro. In the evening we ended up far up the northern end of the island, at starfish beach. It’s found it’s name from the large amount of starfish found in the immediate area. The banks were saturated with picture perfect palms, all over hanging the water, with the mainland’s peninsula skimming the horizon. As the sun headed towards the horizon, a lovely warm glow filled the sky.

I took this photography by moving out into the water, kneeling down lower and shooting upwards in order to put the horizon on the lower third, allowing me to capture the overhanging palms. The colours in the pic just pop, and every time I look at it, I want to go back!

Northern lights above Goðafoss

Already one of the more graceful locations in Iceland, it's hard to improve on the ambiance of this particular waterfall. However, add in the still of night, throw in the soft glow from the moon, and the magnificent dance of the Aurora Borealis, and you've done it. Simply amazing!

This was actually my 3rd evening in a row coming back to this location. The first The first 2 were sunset shoots, and the 3rd I decided to stay up late and arrive early AM hours. And WOW was I rewarded!

In order to get here, you need a bit more time than usual, as it's in the far north-east of the island. But for those making the journey around the entire island, it will definitely be a highlight of your trip.

Goðafoss, it's amazing at any time of the day and in any light conditions.

The Great Ocean Road, Australia

Here's another shot of a location just down the road from the 12 apostles (or should I say 11). These amazing pillars scattered along the coastline are a collection of limestone rocks off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park in Australia.

We spend the night here camping, as we drove slowly back from Melbourne along the Great Ocean road, to Adelaide. Such a beautiful drive and definitely one you should take your time doing if you get the opportunity.

Spending most of the last 13 years travelling abroad, I haven't really had the opportunity to photograph Australia much, but here's a good start ;-)

Trogir, Croatia

Something different from me for today... Not a land or seascape :-) This one is of the beautiful little coastal town in Croatia, called Trogir. A quaint little island with amazing architecture. It's only small, so seeing the whole thing is easily do-able in a single day. Though the place is full of restaurants, cafes and shops - good for kicking back for a bit longer to have some seaside food & drinks! Definitely a place to visit when you're travelling around Croatia.

It's a super wide panorama, and I couldn't bring myself to crop either end.. So you'll have to view it full size to see it properly.

Hope you're all having a fab day!
