For Throwback Thursday, here's an early prototype of the desktop shell. We've come a long way since then!

It's been a while since our last desktop shell post, as we've been busy working on our build server, getting it set up to build disk images for testing in VirtualBox. However, we've still been working on some nice stuff for the desktop shell, getting closer to version 0.1.

We now have the foundation for the Settings app, as well as some initial work on the Appearance settings. We also have a working network indicator thanks to +Ricardo Vieira.

Here's a short demo of workspaces support and the work-in-progress window spread feature.

We're starting work on workspaces support. This will be similar to OS X, with a list view of workspaces at the top, and a grid/flow layout of windows on the current workspace spread out below. We might possibly switch to having the workspaces list on the right, similar to GNOME, so we can have a search text field at the top of the screen.

This window spread/workspace view can be accessed through a hot corner, keyboard shortcut, or the window spread icon in the panel.

If you follow us on GitHub and use Chrome, you should check out the ZenHub.io extension for Chrome, which we use to add additional features to GitHub, including boards, story point estimates, and burndown charts. Here you can see the burndown chart for Papyros shell and also our potential release date for v0.1 of the shell.

Also, we implemented some great features in the shell this weekend related to the app shelf including grouping windows into apps in the shelf and pinning apps to the shelf. New demo video coming in the next few days!

This isn't quite done, but it's too awesome not to share - fully working Material Design window decorations! The color even animates perfectly in sync with the toolbar if it changes color. It's awesome!

This will be landing in the nightly builds very soon, once I get the style tweaked a bit and resizing fixed and an upstream bug in Green Island gets fixed. This is the last major feature targeted at v0.1 of the shell, so after this is done, there are only a few bugs and enhancements before releasing the first version of Papyros Shell.

The desktop shell is getting closer and closer to being usable as a full desktop environment right from the login screen. We recently finished a session manager backend so you can launch the shell from GDM or another login manager (SDDM support for wayland sessions will be available in the next release). We also just added a nice power dialog that pops up when you hit the hardware power key.

What's left before v0.1? Mainly an upstream bug in Green Island causing apps to crash, fixing some issues with the icon theme and mouse speed, and finishing the window spread and Material Design window decorations.

We're starting to implement Material Design window decorations. This is still a work in progress, both on the shell side and in Green Island, so it will be a while before it is finished and hits the nightly builds.

As you can also see in the screenshot, we implemented a transparent app shelf that will darken to the solid dark gray color when a window is maximized.

The workspaces feature is done and will be available in tonight's nightly build! The window spread effect that will run when viewing workspaces will come later.

(For those wondering, yes, this is slightly inspired by the elementary OS design for workspaces.)

We just finished implementing a nice new app drawer! It uses pages instead of a continuous scrolling grid view and also has a nice search functionality.
