Tuesday is World Spay Day (https://gplnk.me/2ldPtjn)

The last Tuesday of February each year is "World Spay Day" and is a great opportunity to draw attention to the benefits of having your pets spayed or neutered.

There are countless homeless animals roaming the streets in every community and every state of the U.S., and of the estimated 6-8 million that enter animal shelters each year, barely half of them are adopted. The rest, tragically, are euthanized.

Spaying or neutering pets is the only effective method of birth control. Together, we can help reduce the population of homeless animals by having our pets spayed or neutered.

In addition to helping to control the pet population, there are health benefits to our pets by having them spayed or neutered, including:

- preventing uterine infections and breast cancer in female pets
- preventing testicular cancer in male pets
- preventing behavioral problems such as spraying or roaming

Help celebrate World Spay Day by having your pet spayed or neutered if they aren't already. Visit our website for more pet holidays and to find a veterinarian near you: https://gplnk.me/2ldPtjn

Are you doing your part to help control the pet population?
Be sure to have your pets spayed or neutered.

These are some incredibly sad statistics to consider:

► Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year.

► Of those, 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.

► Each year, approx. 2.7 million animals are euthanized.

► Of those, 1.2 million are dogs and 1.4 million are cats.

The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is actually less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens for a year, so it makes financial sense to get your pet spayed or neutered.

It can also help control the pet population and reduce the number of animals that end up in animal shelters.

Let's all do our part to help get these numbers down. Be sure to have your pets spayed or neutered.

National Change a Pet's Life Day (http://gplnk.us/2k5rX87)

Today is National #ChangeAPetsLifeDay and we think it is the purr-fect opportunity to encourage you to go out and adopt a pet, call your local animal shelter and ask if they need volunteers, and/or make a donation to your local humane society.

According to the +ASPCA:

► Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.

► Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owner.

► Of the cats entering shelters, approximately 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and less than 5% of cats who came in as strays are returned to their owners.

The numbers above are simply staggering and we all need to work together to make a difference... Go out and change a pet's life today. You will be glad you did.

So Much Fun!
The dogs and cats at the +Animal Rescue League of Iowa had so much fun choosing their own Christmas gift this year. The shelter's annual "Tree of Life" display runs throughout the month of December each year to collect donations for the animals during the holiday season.

Did you know that in the United States there are MILLIONS of animals that do not have a home? Thousands of animal shelters and pet adoption organizations, most of them non-profit, try their best to care for and place as many animals as possible in loving, caring homes. While you may not be in a position to adopt a pet, you CAN help by volunteering or donating to these shelters. We are sure that your local shelter would appreciate any help you can give!

One of our readers just got a new #puppy... He's so new he still has a tag on him!

Just kidding! That's the tag on his new bed. He is an 11-week old #pitbull with #NoName yet.

We think this little guy needs a name! His #petparents are looking for suggestions. What do you think his name should be?

This little guy is so adorable and we hope he doesn't have to deal with the typical stereotypes that often surround Pit Bulls. In fact, according to +Petfinder, the MYTH that Pit Bulls are all inherently vicious is just not true. Each dog should be evaluated on their own merits, not by their breed. A corollary truth is that there truly are no bad dogs, only bad people who raise bad dogs. Unless a Pit Bull has been poorly bred or purposefully trained to attack humans, they generally love people. They are, in fact, one of the most loving, loyal, friendly and dedicated companions you can have. (http://gplnk.us/2hbJWwg)

Since we know the new owners of this cute little pup, we can hopefully convince them to share photos with us throughout his life... so we can share them with you as well.

But, first things first, he needs a name! Please post your suggestions in the comments below.

How often does a Humane Society run out of pets?

Not often enough; however, the +Humane Society of Indianapolis DID run out this weekend, thanks to the folks in Indianapolis who responded to their “Home For the Pawlidayz” #BlackFriday adoption special sponsored by retailer +Zappos.com.

It warms our heart to know that so many pets will have a home of their own this holiday season and we hope that other animal shelters had similar turnouts.

“We’re very grateful for the opportunity to partner with Zappos and Best Friends Animal Society,” said Kristen McGuire, Director of Customer Experience for the Humane Society of Indianapolis. “Every animal should have a home for the holidays, and we’re hopeful this event will help us find loving homes for all our current shelter residents.”

Fill Your Heart, Not Your Cart
If you do a Google news search for "Black Friday Pet Adoptions" you will find that dozens (perhaps hundreds—perhaps even more) of animal shelters are offering to waive or lower the adoption fee to encourage more adoptions this year. Many of these shelters are filled to capacity and these pets need good homes.

Online retailer +Zappos.com is running a "Pawlidayz" program and has pledged to donate $1.25 million to +Best Friends Animal Society to provide free adoptions at 115 shelters across the country beginning on Black Friday and running through Cyber Monday.

Their goal is to find homes for 9,000 pets to honor the 9,000 dogs and cats killed in America's shelter each day simply because they do not have a safe place to call home.
