"Barnard b (or GJ 699 b) is a recently discovered Super-Earth planet orbiting Barnard's Star, making it the second nearest star system to the Earth. Although likely cold (-170 degrees centigrade), it could still have the potential to harbor primitive life if it has a large, hot iron/nickel core and enhanced geothermal activity. That was a conclusion announced by Villanova University Astrophysicists Edward Guinan and Scott Engle at a January 10 press conference held at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomy Society (AAS) in Seattle, WA."

"A team of scientists has, for the first time, used a single, cohesive computer model to simulate the entire life cycle of a solar flare: from the buildup of energy thousands of kilometers below the solar surface, to the emergence of tangled magnetic field lines, to the explosive release of energy in a brilliant flash.

The accomplishment, detailed in the journal Nature Astronomy, sets the stage for future solar models to realistically simulate the Sun's own weather as it unfolds in real time, including the appearance of roiling sunspots, which sometimes produce flares and coronal mass ejections. These eruptions can have widespread impacts on Earth, from disrupting power grids and communications networks, to damaging satellites and endangering astronauts."

"Astronomers have recently conducted photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2018byg, a peculiar Type Ia supernova. Results of these observations, presented in a paper published January 3 on the arXiv pre-print server, suggest that this cosmic explosion was caused by double detonation of a massive helium shell."

"Adina Feinstein, a University of Chicago graduate student, announced the discovery last week (January 7, 2019) at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle. The peer-reviewed paper about this finding has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal."

"The new planet – K2-288Bb – may be either rocky or a gas-rich planet similar to Neptune, and is 226 light-yearsaway in the constellation Taurus. The star system it is in consists to two dim, cool M-type stars separated by about 5.1 billion miles (8.2 billion kilometers) – about six times the distance between Saturn and the sun. The planet orbits the smaller, dimmer star – about one-third the sun’s size and mass – every 31.3 days.
