Hi everyone, thank you so much for following this collection! I've decided to combine future posts into my The Wild in Wildlife collection, linked below, which will now include everything that was in Lemurs of Madagascar and Wild Brazil (but not Antarctica, which will remain on its own for the time being). I won't move older posts out of this collection for now, so you can always browse the history. Thanks again for visiting!

Queen of the Pantanal

This is Lusa, a large female Jaguar (Panthera onca), photographed in the Refúgio Ecológico Caiman in the Brazilian Pantanal. Like many of the jaguars in the region, she is being tracked by a research group (you can see a radio tag behind her right ear, but she's completely wild). She was just stunning to see, by far the largest and most powerful of the American cats -- much larger than a leopard, for example, smaller only than tigers and lions. Her eyes are reflecting the camera flash, and I've held onto this photo for a year deciding whether or not to "fix" that (by shopping in eyes from another jaguar image), but I finally decided to leave it as is.

Who Goes There?

Hopefully we didn't disturb this little guy and his friends too much. We were in canoes, paddling through flooded forest in the Amazon basin, when we spotted them lined up on the shady side of a tree trunk. I thought these were some type of Long Nosed Bat (genus Leptonycteris), but Wikipedia says all of those are a bit farther north; definitely one of the New World Leaf Nosed Bats (family Phyllostomidae).

Nonchalant

Still one of my favorite sightings from the Brazilian Amazon, the adorable Southern Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla). If you look at my post of a few days ago from boating through the flooded forest, you can imagine the habitat where we found him. He's a type of anteater (you might even be able to zoom in and see a leftover ant or termite crawling on his ear), much smaller than the Giant Anteater, but also much larger than the Silky Anteater.

Proud Mom to Be

We saw this beautiful Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) on her nest in the Brazilian Pantanal -- you can even see two speckled eggs.

For #birdweekend  with +Heidi Anne Morris; +Margaret Tompkins Wikipedia describes the lapwing as a wading bird, living in wetlands and flooded grasslands, so you may want her for #waterbirdwednesday  (+Water Bird Wednesday); #brazilmonday with +Marton Divenyi (+Brazil Monday ); #Birds4All by +Ricky L Jones & +Walter Soestbergen (+Birds4All) ; +HQSP Birds curated by +Andy Brown +Dilip Mundkur +Ian Calland and +Anja Wessels #hqspbirds ; #birdsgallery with +Heinrich Wagner and +Susan Wilkinson ( +Birds GALLERY ); #birdloversworldwide with +Robert SKREINER +Roswitha Böhmer and +Gemma Costa ( +BIRD Lovers & WILDLIFE ); #BirdsInFocus #BirdSpeciesLink by +Risto Talman (+Birds in Focus ); #wholewildlifeweek with +Sandy Schepis +Dick Whitlock  +Anette Mossbacher and +Diego Cattaneo ( +Whole Wildlife Week )

Paradise Tanager

This is an amazingly beautiful bird, and I wish I had a better photo for you -- this one is cropped quite a bit. The paradise tanager (Tangara chilensis) is a colorful little songbird living throughout the Amazon basin; I photographed this one from a canopy tower near Manaus.

Showdown in Brazil

There's a competition in Brazil, but it isn't the Olympics this guy will be competing in -- he's competing with his fellows to try to attract the girls' attention! This is the Guianan cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola rupicola), one of the most crazily beautiful birds I've ever seen, photographed in the Brazilian Amazon.

Chestnut Woodpecker

We saw this beautiful Chestnut Woodpecker (Celeus elegans) from a canoe in the Mamiraua Reserve, in the Brazilian Amazon. So many amazing woodpeckers and flickers on the trip, a group of birds I'd barely ever seen before.

The Furry Sloth Buddha

This guy looks very wise and serene in his tree, mostly because he's probably sleepy. I believe this is Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus), seen in a park in the Manaus area of the Brazilian Amazon. Aside from the two toes (only on the front feet, the back feet still have three), his longer snout and fur are very different from the more common three toed sloths (like the one on the cover of this collection).
