Tilapia skin, until now, was considered trash. Unlike the gauze bandages, the sterilized tilapia skin goes on and stays on.

This article somewhat exaggerates what is actually happening, but this system is still incredibly cool!

Google Translate invented its own language to help it translate more effectively.

What’s more, nobody told it to. It didn’t develop a language (or interlingua, as Google call it) because it was coded to. It developed a new language because the software determined over time that this was the most efficient way to solve the problem of translation.

By the way, at the end of the article are two updates that link to fantastic comments. You should really read those to get the full impact of what's going on here.
TL;DR: Google Translate developed it's own language to make translation easier. On it's own.

Do you want Skynet?

BECAUSE THIS IS HOW YOU GET SKYNET!

(also, holy carp is that just awesome)

(in a terrifying kind of way)

Below information courtesy of +Adam Liss:

Be careful: several of those headlines are misleading. It's a shame, because they're mixed in with some real science, and it's not obvious which is which.

For example:

The "working fusion reactor" isn't fusing and wasn't designed to. What's working is the magnetic field that contains the plasma that would be fused in a working reactor. It's an important step, for sure, but it's far from a working reactor.

The reason sloths "almost die" when they poop has nothing to do with the actual pooping. The danger is that they have to descend from their trees to the ground, where they're vulnerable to predators.

And Earth's "second moon" isn't a moon at all. It's an asteroid that orbits the Sun. It comes unusually close to Earth, and its point of nearest approach appears to orbit the Earth.

Sad that +New Scientist and +ScienceAlert try to pass this off as legit science. :-\

This doesn't surprise me one bit!

Google got its self-driving cars to make three-point turns, but instead of using the optimal path, they programmed it to use the path that minimizes the amount of time the car spends in reverse, so as to not freak out the human occupants.

This article is from May, but holy cow! These images look incredible for eink! It's like comic book pages (or newsprint) and that's good enough for me!

I need this on a decent sized ereader (I'm thinking 9 or 10 inches) so that I can actually do some comic reading! I have thousands of digital comics, but I seldom read them because most of them are in color and don't look good on an ereader. And when I read them on my tablet, my eyes hurt because of the really bright backlight. So, yes please! Let's get this awesome eink screen installed on an android tablet stat! (And yes, I know it's got a two second lag for screen refresh, but I can deal with that.)

The secret to being an effective worker is not working too hard.

Okay, I know the article is a few years old, but I just got back from a vacation and I'm definitely feeling more up to work now that I'm rested and recharged. Just make sure you take a vacation that actually let's you recharge. I can honestly say that I have never, until now, returned from a vacation actually rested; instead I usually come back stressed out and more frazzled than before. Do something you'll truly enjoy. (I hit up #RockFest in Wisconsin with my cats in a camper; best vacation ever and I even came back with a tattoo!!)
