It’s Cold Homes Week and Age UK is raising awareness of the devastating effects of the cold on older people.

In this guest blog, Alan Maryon-Davis, who is Honorary Professor of Public Health at Kings College London, explains why the issue of cold homes is a massive public health crisis.

New figures released by the ONS show that last winter there were a staggering 40,800 excess winter deaths among the over 65s from cold-related illness such as heart attacks and strokes.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: 'After last year’s modest improvement, this year's dramatic jump in excess winter deaths is a terrible rebuke to anyone who thought it was 'job done' when it comes to keeping older people safe from the cold.'

Yesterday Age UK launched its campaign for warm park homes with a packed event in the House of Commons. Over 30 MPs attended and pledged their support for the campaign, which is very encouraging.

Find out why Age UK is calling on the government to roll out an energy efficiency scheme for park homes residents.

Everyone should be able to live in a warm home. But there are over 100,000 older people across England and Wales living in park homes, which are often poorly insulated and freezing cold in winter.

Government schemes to improve the energy efficiency of homes are failing park home residents, which is why Age UK is calling on the Government to roll out a specific energy efficiency scheme for people living in park homes.

Sign our Don't Cut Care petition and make sure people like 82-year-old Peter don't struggle: http://bit.ly/DontCutCare

Peter told us, 'Until recently, I’d always had good experiences with social care. But now I’m worried that the bottom’s fallen out of the system. The government needs to step in, because at the moment, people aren’t getting what they need.'

Ferocious cuts to home care and community services – like home care, meals on wheels and day centre care – mean that more than a million older people are forced to sacrifice their dignity because they can’t get the support they need.

The Government needs to invest in care for older people like Peter. Please show your support and sign our Don’t Cut Care petition: http://bit.ly/DontCutCare
