An afternoon at Long Beach in the Hamptons enjoyed by kids...and seagulls!

Long Beach, also known as Foster Memorial Beach or Foster Town Beach is not as glamorous as the Atlantic Ocean beaches in the Hamptons. But...calm and shallow waters, shells and stones, make it a kid-friendly beach. So it's very popular with families!

Camp Hero State Park - a wonderful place to visit with kids but are all the conspiracies true? Is this the Hampton’s own Roswell or Area 51?

Photos and more background here: http://bit.ly/1ncN4R2

Formerly a US military base used in World War 2 and during the Cold War.

It’s in Montauk in the Hamptons, New York State

The park not only attracts hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers and picnickers but also those drawn by all the conspiracy theories - often known as the Montauk Project - surrounding the former base. Tales of mind control operations, aliens working with humans, abductions, time travel, parallel dimensions, underground laboratories with paranormal experiments and more have been linked to Camp Hero. Witnesses claim these conspiracies are true and have told their stories in books and documentaries.

Are the pyramids or a Gothic cathedral a duck?
The Big Duck in Flanders, Long Island was built in 1931 during the Great Depression to attract customers to its poultry shop.
It also was the inspiration for the architectural term coined by Robert Venturi and his peers when he described buildings as either a "duck" - when a building itself is a symbol - or a "decorated shed."

It's still a roadside attraction, gift shop and tourist information center. A short drive from the Hamptons and a fun place to take your kids.

20 views of the Atlantic beaches in the Hamptons in the off-seasonhttp://bit.ly/QXV1Pr

A big part of the allure of the Hamptons are its beaches with pristine sands. Soon the crowds - including the rich and famous - will be arriving.
But the best thing about the beaches in the off-season is that often you have the whole beach to yourself.
I've gone on solitary walks, taken the kids beachcombing, watched least terns on the shoreline and never had to worry about a parking permit for any beach.

Lilypads in a vernal pond in the Hamptons.  Everyone will soon be arriving from NY and elsewhere to congregate on beaches in the Hamptons, but there are also some incredible hikes in nature reserves throughout the South Fork on Long Island.
My kids were nature detectives on this walk: http://bit.ly/1hPqGdb
