Medium size butterfly of around 65mm. The lower wing eye spots are distorted except 2 spots. The main eyespot is much larger than the second one.

70 Butterflies of India

Exactly 5 months ago I started this collection and today it has reached a milestone of 50k followers with 70 different Butterfly/Moth species part of collection. Appreciate all your support along the way.

I will be off for next few weeks. Will be back with more butterfly / moth species.

Common Wanderer, Female, form Philomela (rare)

I was not knowing that this was rare butterfly when I took the shot. The center bright yellow portion indicates a rare form of female wanderer called Philomela.

Wing span of around 75mm. Females mimic Blue Tiger butterfly in order to confuse predators, as Blue Tiger is inedible.

Tricolored Pied Flat, Wet Season Form

As the name 'Flat' suggests, these group of butterflies rest with their wings spread out flat like Moths. This species is bright-yellow in Dry Season Form, but turn dark grey in Dry Season Form (as in photo). Medium size of around 45mm

Beautiful large butterfly of 80mm size. Found across India. Sexually dimorphic. Males are as in photo, whereas females mimic tiger butterfly.

Chestnut Bob, Male

Horagina Betta, Bengaluru, Karnataka. Sep 2016.

Surprisingly its a butterfly, though looks like a large fly or a moth. Belongs to skipper family of Butterfly, known for their quick flights. Size of around 30mm.

Beautiful chestnut color scales overlaid on dark brown. Spots on wings for Males is not clearly visible, whereas females have white spots on the wings.

Commonly found medium sized butterfly of around 45mm. Got a very close shot of this one. Can clearly see the veins and hairs on the wings

Plum Judy

Horagina Betta, Bengaluru, Karnataka. Sep 2016.

One of only 2 butterflies of Riodinidae family found in South India (other one is Straight Plum Judy found only in Parashurama Kshetra). Rest all are found in North India only. Medium size of around 45mm.

Has dancing movement when it lands as it turns around, probably in order to confuse the predator.

Common Baron, Male

Large butterfly growing upto 80mm found across India.
Has stiff flight and generally flies low.

Sexually Dimorphic. Males (picture) are dark and have very small white spots on wings. Females are much lighter with bigger white spots.
