Yellow Spotted Salamander in Muskoka
I found this one crawling up the step to my front door one night so I rescued him and helped him find a nice home in the forest. More photos and details on the salamander can be found on my website: http://otterboyd.com/yellow-spotted-salamander-in-muskoka/

Wild Turkey Taking A Dust Bath

I've been seeing a lot more wild turkeys around my house lately and just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving. This one had great fun giving himself a dust bath in the field next to the forest. I know some people will be thinking, "covered in sand today, covered in cranberry sauce tomorrow", but this turkey has nothing to worry about. The wildlife around here is psychic. The moment the thought crosses your mind about trying to catch anything for the dinner table the wildlife senses those intentions and magically disappears. They allow me to stalk and hunt with a camera and nothing else. I have accepted the fact that the turkeys will outwit me every time so when I go out there I just try to get some snaps instead of snacks.

Little White Mushroom on Colorful Autumn Leaf

The recent heatwave in Muskoka delayed the Fall colors a bit but now the chill is back and leaves are coloring up again. It should be a nice weekend for walks in the woods around here. I hope you all have a nice weekend too!

The little white mushroom looks innocent enough resting quietly on a blazing leaf but it is most likely deadly as so many of the all white ones are.

White Cosmos Flower
It is nice to see cosmos blooms in mass plantings but sometimes less is more as in the case of this lone white cosmos flower standing tall against a backdrop of Fall colors. Cosmos is usually associated with the height of hot dry summer but this one seems to represent something else. It’s a beacon reminding me that soon all the Autumn colors will fade into the background to be replaced by cool, crisp and clean wintry whites dominating the landscape.

First Day of Fall in Muskoka

The calendar may say it's the first day of Fall but the temperature says it's mid-summer. It will be another good weekend for playing in the water.

Happy first day of Fall everyone, I hope you all have a great weekend too!

Sunset on Lake Muskoka, Gravenhurst Ontario Canada

I took a break from fishng to watch the sun setting behind an island on Lake Muskoka. Being in the right place at the right time to catch a view like this always makes me forget about all the other catches that were and weren’t landed!

Tiger Lily Flower

You wouldn't expect to see exotic tropical-looking flowers growing wild in a place like Muskoka but these tiger lilies do just fine here. They apparently prefer moist soil however I found these in the most dry, sandy and nutrient deprived soil on the property. They survived our very cold winters, boggy spring, parched desert-like summer to push their way up through the grasses and weeds. I plan to spread them around but I've read that they can be invasive. I will take care to keep them far from any of the important areas of the garden and contain them to the most difficult areas which need the most help and color.
