We have adopted today new measures for a common approach to managing Europe's external borders.
The package includes in particular a proposal for the establishment of a European Border and Coast Guard and a proposal for a targeted revision of the Schengen Borders Code.

The proposal for a European Border and Coast Guard aims at ensuring a strong and shared management of the external borders.

The revision of the #Schengen Borders Code introduces systematic checks against relevant databases for all people entering or exiting the Schengen area.

Decision taken to relocate 120,000 refugees

European Home Affairs Ministers backed our proposal to relocate 120,000 refugees from Greece, Italy and other Member States.

Following this important decision, #TeamJunckerEU is working together to present focused, operational actions to Heads of State and Government today as they meet in the Council of the European Union to discuss the refugee crisis.

Relocation is an important part of a comprehensive approach to deal with the ongoing refugee crisis. At the same time, the root causes of the #refugeecrisis must be addressed. Taking strong steps to address the situation internally allows us work more on the external aspect.

#RefugeeCrisis‬ | After #Budapest , Commissioner Avramopoulos, responsible for Migration, went to #Munich and #Rosenheim . He said:

" #Germany 's approach to the refugee crisis has always been and continues to be an embodiment of a European spirit. There is a reason President Juncker mentioned Munich in his State of the Union address last week. Because you are an example. You are an example of the openness and solidarity - the values - which our European Union is founded upon. You have opened your hearts and your homes. I commend you."

"Europe is the baker in Kos who gives away his bread to hungry and weary souls. Europe is the students in Munich and Passau who bring clothes for the new arrivals...This is the Europe I want to live in."

After visiting and discussing the ways the Commission can assist the front line Member States in Calais (France), Kos (Greece) and Traiskirchen (Austria), Commissioner Avramopoulos, responsible for Migration, will be in Budapest and in Munich next week.
