"Old Made New"

One of the coolest things about mirrorless cameras is how useful they make old, vintage lenses again. That's particularly true of Sony's a6500, which gives you a host of manual focus aids (the best being the ability to magnify the image in the viewfinder) as well as add 5 Axis optical stabilization. The end result is that it is very easy to adapt vintage lenses like this M42 mount Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 lens, which, as you can see, takes beautiful photos. I've done some processing work here, but the image was beautiful right out of camera. A very old lens, made new again.

The Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/1.4 is going to be a very, very special lens. Here's another wide open exampe of how the legendary Zeiss color, microcontrast, and sharpness all come together to make something beautiful. I've done some targeted editing here (the vignette on the lens is actually not bad), but I wanted to enhance the mood. I was very happy that my youngest son chose to wear a red shirt. His little form was the perfect color foil to the green forest around. "Verdant Decay"

I wanted to share this interesting mix of verdant greenery bisected by the graffiti and rust of urban decay. Scenes like this draw my eye because of the inherit contradictions between clean and dirty, fresh and aged, nature and industry, etc... And yet the two are strangely complimentary, too. Happy 150th, Canada

Yesterday was "Canada Day" here in Canada, the day that we celebrate nationhood. This was a special birthday, though, as Canada turned 150. The celebrations and fireworks displays were a little more special than usual, and even in our smaller community the fireworks display was impressive. I traveled light for this night, throwing mirrorless gear into my Peak Design Everyday Backpack (review coming week after next) along with my light Oben carbon fiber travel tripod (which I love!). I used the Sony a6500 for this shot (actually a composite of three shots) and the Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 lens.

I've got my hands on an early copy of the upcoming Zeiss Milvus Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 lens. I already own the stunningly good Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II, so I intend to have a serious showdown between these heavyweights. It's fabulous to see how much beauty there is right now just out in the ditches by roads. Wildflowers grow with their beautiful colors. The Zeiss Milvus 135mm f/2 lens does such an amazing job of giving you both the "cream" of defocus plus the incredible sharpness and microcontrast that Zeiss is so famous for. This bright daisy was my target amongst the other flowers. Enjoy a little brightness in your day.

This week I'm delivering my final verdict on the new Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary lens, and I've spent some time with it the last week mounted on an APS-C camera. I was happy to find that my former observations remained true, and the Sigma is a pretty amazing performer for the money. It has exceeded my expectations in most ways. This image shows the amazing compression of 640mm equivalent of focal length, and helps bury this cabin into a framework of forest. I shot this image from about 300+ feet away.
