Beyond the lights

Street urchins clustered around a lamp on the grounds of Mysore Palace, a brightly lit reminder of princely excess from India's royal past. What was once an off-limits enclave for the rulers of the royal state of Mysore is now a public attraction whose grounds are open to the public free of cost, including a nightly lighting ceremony that draws in huge crowds.

Jungle

Visitors regard the concrete jungle of metropolitan Mumbai encroaching into Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a massive swathe of protected forest housing ancient Buddhist cave dwellings, in the heart of India's largest metropolitan area.

Incense

Smoke from hundreds of incense sticks hangs heavy over devotees offering their prayers in the courtyard of the Jade Buddha temple in Shanghai, China. I'd always believed that religion was actively discouraged in China under the Communist Party, but turns out, barring a brief period right after Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s, Chinese citizens have actually enjoyed freedom of religion as a constitutional right. Travel has a wonderful way of surprising and enriching one's world view!

The Skeptic

A fortuitous shot taken on the grounds of the Jing'An temple in Shanghai, which perfectly encapsulates my feelings towards organized religion. :)

Mother isn't quite herself today

A plastic glove, a meat cleaver, a pile of almost comically red meat, an ashen faced girl at the counter, her mother asleep in the back... There was something too cinematic and Hitchcock-ian about this street scene in Qibao that I couldn't pass up.

Of course, in truth this is just a hardworking family caught on camera relishing a quiet moment at the end of a particularly busy day, and a part of me feels really guilty carving out a slice of their daily life and imposing a more sinister story onto it for some vague creative satisfaction. How do full time street photographers and photojournalists deal with this internal conflict?

Moonrise over Huangshan

I shot this late in the evening after a long day walking up and down the concrete walkways on top of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in eastern China's Anhui province. The day had been a bust, photography-wise, as a low-lying haze of smoke and dust blocked out the surrounding scenery and created an sharp, ugly grey line right through each photo. However, as the afternoon turned to evening, the haze started to blend a bit more naturally into the orange sky, and a blood moon (a full moon + lunar eclipse) rose over the mountains. The haze then actually worked to my advantage, as the red moon would have been lost inside a typical orange evening sky, but instead stood out clearly in the low-lying haze. Who knew air pollution could actually improve your landscape photos?!

Pudong at night

The Bladerunner-esque skyline of Shanghai's Pudong business district is one of those cliches you can't resist. It is also an excellent place to learn the virtue of patience.

I shot this on a bitterly cold October evening from the base of the 'Monument to the People's Heroes' at the northern end of Shanghai's historic Bund area. Making matters just that little bit more challenging, the Huangpu river is an active commercial waterway, which means every few minutes I had to wait for yet another large, dark, featureless ship to pass by before I could take my next shot. I was flanked by at least a dozen other photographers, each patiently snapping away long exposures and, like me, testing the strength of their relationships with their hapless, shivering better halves.
