One cannot write about Kinetic Design, without bearing in mind the movement that was called Kinetic Art. A well documented and brief article of the Art Story website gives a synthetic view of this movement, initiated around 1910 by sculptors and painters. Multiple ways were experienced to communicate motion to web design. DHTML brought a lot of wonderful experiments. Javascript and its many children continues to lead the way to kinetic experiments. Today, in 2017, CSS3 joined the choir with many proposals.

As an example, a Danish website, infinum.dk, offers interesting DHTML experiments, see for instance the triangle experiment.
