Abandonded miners cottage - Gwalia, Western Australia...

We are back on the road again, and over the last few weeks we have crossed from the east coast of Australia to the West Coast, via the centre of Australia.

Towards the end of this 5,500 km journey, we had the opportunity to revisit the ghost mining town of Gwalia.. This town is full of old relics and memorabilia, and I have poste d quite a few images on G+ before.

This shot is of one of the old miner's cottages in the soft rays of a cloudy morning. I have kept processing quite simple as I was experimenting with the new Topaz Studio app through Photoshop.

This one is for #VintageSaturday with my Missing in Action buddies +Leo Deegan and +Donna St. Pierre. I guess we all have been a bit busy lately.

Hope you all are having a great weekend..
Cheers Steve

Abandoned Mining Trucks..Coober Pedy...

In the outback opal mining town of Coober Pedy in Northern South Australia, the opal was originally mined from the rock using the good old fashioned pick and shovel. As the holes became deeper, the waste (or mullock) was hand winched to the surface.

This was then followed by the blower trucks, which were essentially huge vacuum cleaners which sucked the remaining waste from the mines.

There are many of these old blower trucks scattered around Coober Pedy, and they give the town a great outback, historical feel.

In fact, a blower truck greets visitors at the entry to the town.

* Burra Homestead - Diesel and Dust cover...*

In 1989, Aussie rock legends Midnight Oil released the Diesel and Dust album...a true classic. The cover for the album featured an amazing photo of the old and run down Burra homestead, by renowned Australian Photographer Ken Duncan.

The album was a massive hit, and in 2010 it was named as Number 1 album in a book called 100 Best Australian Albums.

The Burra homestead is on the outskirts of the town of Burra, some 160km north of Adelaide in South Australia.

We drove through Burra back in 2015, and sought out the old homestead.. it wasn't quite as I had imagined, but it still maintains that certain aura.

Abandoned....

An abandoned stone hut I came across on the road into Melrose in South Australia. This was near the end of our first around Australia trip back in 2007.

We revisited the old hut last year, and while it was still there, the old tree was long gone.

My weekly contribution to #VintageSaturday with the illustrious duo of +Leo Deegan and +Donna St. Pierre.

Have a great weekend everyone.

His Masters Voice....

A fairly well preserved HMV portable gramophone, on display in the old Patroni's Guest House in the ghost town of Gwalia.

This portable gramaphone from HMV was from the early1930's, possibly as late as 1934. With the increased availability of electric record players in the 1930's, the age of the wind up gramophone was drawing to a close. However many outback households could not afford the "new technologies" and so wind ups remained popular in the less affluent communities.

Patroni's Guest Home was built around the early 1920's and provided accommodation for the single miner's who worked in the nearby Son's of Gwalia mine.

This is my contribution this week for #VintageSaturday with the inimitable +Leo Deegan and the inestimable +Donna St. Pierre.

Rail Switch Point - Abandoned Chillagoe Smelter - FNQ...

The Chillagoe Smelters once operated on the outskirts of Chillagoe in North Queensland in the early 1900's. It closed down in 1943.

These days it is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Most of the buildings have been relocated or demolished, but there is still a fair bit of infrastructure to see. This switch point was on an old section of spur line.

A late entry to #VintageSaturday with the dynamic duo of +Leo Deegan and +Donna St. Pierre...with special guest appearances from +Liz MC...

Seen better days....

A beat up old truck waiting outside the worker's cottage in the deserted town of Gwalia in Western Australia.

Gwalia was the township that developed around the Sons of Gwalia gold mine.
The Sons of Gwalia, at the time one of Australia’s major underground gold mines, provided work for hundreds of people including a large number of Italian and Yugoslav immigrants. The miners erected dwellings in Gwalia from 1898 to be within walking distance of their work .

For #VintageSaturday with +Leo Deegan and +Donna St. Pierre.

Happy Easter everyone.

Northey's Store, Hill End, NSW....

About three years ago I posted another view of Northey's Store, which is at the top of Clarke Street in the old gold mining town of Hill End in New South Wales.

Here is another shot of the store for #VintageSaturday with +Leo Deegan and +Donna St. Pierre.

The store was in the central busy district of town during the gold boom of the 1870's. It is still operational today, serving the needs of the tourists visiting Hill End.

Wattle Flat Anglican Church Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia..

The Wattle Flat Church is on the main road between Bathurst and Sofala in the NSW Central West. It is now a disused church that was completed in 1874, and consecrated in 1879 by the Bishop Samuel Marsden.

The original church structure had been constructed in the 1869 as the Anglican Church of St Thomas..  The Church,  and cemetery at the back of the church, as shown in this post, became known as the Holy Trinity Anglican Church and Cemetery. It was in use from 1871 to as late as 2002.
