Some times this location works out, some times it doesn't. Today it did.

Sunset at Lighthouse Field, Jan 23, 2017
There are goofs in this one. Can you spot them? This photo is made of about 12 exposures. Two for the sky, and another 10 or so for the foreground. There were 15 or 20 people in this shot. To remove them I kept shooting from my tripod in the same position. I layered the exposures and made layer masks in Photoshop. This allowed me to "erase" people that were in one exposure, but not in the next as they walked past. The one lady stood still enough that she was in all of them, so I decided she should stay. There's a little ghost of a person off to the right where I didn't paint her out well enough. I thought it was funny so I left that in too. I'll blog about the technique sometime soon. No really.

Revisiting one of my favorite photos from 2014. There was no swell whatsoever, but this one surfer seemed determined to wait for something to ride. This photo isn't my typical style. I usually prefer things a little more subtle... but there was just nothing subtle about this sunrise over the Monterey Bay.

Just one last shot... Landscape photo at ISO 3200? It's not really something I'd recommend, but there I was at the end a great evening at Pfeiffer Beach with plenty of beautiful reflections. The light was fading fast and I'd need a flashlight any moment. But this one last scene kept begging me to try anyway.

A new one from a spectacular evening at Pfeiffer Beach last December. Usually I like my colors more subtle, but I decided to go a little bananas while working on this tonight. The idea was to check reality at the door... but if you've been here when the sun sets right through the keyhole arch, you've already done that.

Misty sunrise goodness at a wildlife refuge in the San Joaquin Valley.
I'm going to be working on these photos for months. Some places that I visit are jaw dropping beautiful -- even before the sun is even up. Then things get better .

A photograph of great beauty and great tragedy. A big swell was hitting and I knew just the place to be. Many of the photographs and sensations were wonderful and memorable. Unimaginable horror was playing out just a couple of miles north of me. I had no idea that some adventurous kids were in enormous trouble until everything with lights and a siren went screaming by on Hwy 1. There was absolutely nothing I could do to help until a few days later -- to help search and maybe recover.
