Fruit Of The Earth

This autumn fungus photo is not true black and white but the earthy split tone treatment suits it better I think. Probably common puffball, Scleroderma citrinum, but never 100% sure with fungi.

On Patrol

We watched this fisheries protection vessel patrolling the coastal waters around the Roseland by Towan beach, and it seemed to be stopping and boarding every fishing vessel in the area. Some sort of a crackdown maybe?

On Guard

The small but beautifully formed castle at St Mawes in Cornwall has stood guard over the entrance to Carrick Roads for 475 years, and has been very well preserved.

St Just In Roseland

Gravestones are fascinating records of lives past. This stone on the grave of John and Mary Laskey records him as a yeoman, which at the time of his death in 1790 would usually have meant that he was a farmer who owned his own land, rather than a tenant farmer. However, after a bit of research we found that at the time of his death he was sub-leasing Tregaire Bartons farm in Gerrans parish, paying Poor Rate and Land Tax on his holding. This farm is still in operation to this day. Fascinating stuff!

Light & Shade

Inside of Truro Cathedral, looking up at the ceiling. Don't ask me which part, I don't know much about cathedral architecture, I just know it was all jaw-droppingly beautiful and awe inspiring.

Round & About

Continuing a Cornish theme this morning, one of the five roundhouses at Veryan on Cornwall's Roseland peninsula, from a visit last year. These houses were built in the 19th century by the local vicar, Jeremiah Trist, for his daughters. Four of them are sited in pairs at opposite ends of the village: the crosses on top were to ward off the Devil, and they were built round so there'd be no corners for the Devil to hide in.

Say Hello

One of the lovely horses that graze a field beside Whytell Meadows, giving us a nod as we walk by snapping the bugs and flowers.
