One of my first images with my new +Olympus OM-D  . Went to London to see +Photo London  at +Somerset House . Been looking for a carry around that can handle bight highlights and low light. Went into London Camera Exchange Group the strand and came out with this, shame I didn't have it the day before for Don McCullin. It's passed the highlights test . Tricky one this with the dark room and the bright sky, so far so good :)

I am old
nostalgic
I am modern
yet classic
I have afro-centric roots
but my freckles take the routes

I know what I am doing...
it is not coerced
it is not spontaneous
it was well in my head
I draw attention
my dimensions expose
the nakedness of the minds
that view my repose
But I'm not baffled by their flattery
my thoughts are genuine
but imprisoned in the moment that captured
me in this film
not dynamic like latin
still-birthed in this passage
waxing cold without a carriage
excluded from the world

I am old
nostalgic
I am modern
yet classic
I have black and white roots
I am reckless when it shoots.

The house of a Romani family the former Papeteries étienne paper mill, Arles, France. A young man asked me to look inside, I walked trough to the kitchen behind the curtain. The walls were covered in old french wallpaper of little town scenes.

The small buildings belong to the disused paper mill, probably the workers housing. Now occupied by Romani families who welcomed us as we walked to and from the "Night of the Year" the photography experience of the +Les Rencontres de la photographie, Arles 2015

Taken in #Arles at the #Photography festival. I used a flash for this, I regularly use a flash during the day though very rarely for interior shots. It's only small, fit's into the palm of my hand, on my Olympus Pen, but the extra burst of light makes all the difference.

Starburst image, collecting backlit images for a post about starbursts flare and fill flash :) Buster in #Paris

#streetphotography

Taken in Paris,

It's tricky getting starbursts right, but they are a particular favourite of mine. I've tried (and failed) many times, so if you want to know what I've picked up on the way by way of increasing success rate here it is:

Use flash, otherwise your subject will be too dark. If you are not comfortable with the settings it's OK to use P mode here as the camera will detect that you want to balance the exposure and will fill your subject as evenly as it can.

Use a narrow aperture for the best stars f16-22 -  wider apertures (smaller numbers) will create flare instead.

I have a technique that often works for me, position your self so that the sun is just peeping over the bit where you want it to be. This will often be low looking up. Then take some images in quick succession adjusting your position very slightly, back and forth - tiny movements.

You will then have several shots to choose from with the star being bigger and smaller.

Check and see that the sun ray is not obscuring anything important like the eyes.
