Maya's Restaurant

Was in Oud Metha for work and got really delayed for lunch. It was one of those days when your hunger pangs have reached a crescendo, yet you are only desirous of a home cooked meal. It was then Mr. S reminded me of this Indian restaurant called Maya's Restaurant.

This is a very old restaurant and we have many a times in the past gone there whenever we were away from home at lunch or dinner time and craving only for food which taste just like home cooked food. In all these years, this no frills restaurant has been consistent in the taste of the food they dish out. I opted for A Vegetarian Thali & Mr. S for a Non~Vegetarian. As you can see from the picture that it is just like the thali you would serve at home. Simple yet Yum. Their Masala Chaas is a must try.

Sitting pretty in front of a Georgian Fountain, on a cobbled walk, Demir Pasha, is an authentic Turkish Bakery. Most of the dishes they serve here are inspired by Traditional Turkish Wooden Bakery.

What you see in the picture below, placed on the left of it, is called a Pide (pronounced P ~ Day) . Pide is a Turkish version of the Italian Pizza and the Lebanese Manoushe. A traditional Turkish flat bread is topped with toppings of meat, vegetables or Zaatar, the choice is yours and then baked fresh before being served, right out of the oven. It's overtly delicious and I am surely going back for some more with other toppings. 😋

Next to the Pide is a Turkish Speciality Bread called Simit. You can say Simit is a distant cousin of the English Bagel. These breads are encrusted with sesame seeds, zaatar etc. and are very popular in Ottoman Cuisine and also throughout the Middle East. This was so soft with an extra dose of Zaatar and I loved every bite. Nothing can compare to oven fresh stuff.

Yesterday had this at #Kitebeach #Dubai . This is called KAAKE DJEIJ . Here Ka'ak is an Arabic word used generally to refer to any baked goods. DJEIJ is the Lebanese for chicken. Kaakunada on the kite beach is known for this. I simply loved this. The outer layer is baked to perfection with the sesame seeds providing the right kind of crunch. The filling is light and cheesy and so yummy. I was a tad bit disappointed with the chicken in the filling. Maybe just one of those days. This is a must try if you are on the Kite Beach.

Biryani has been the greatest mood up lifter for me and my folks always. I have been a little nostalgic and have been feeling low, missing all the festive celebrations back home in India for the past few days. So it was a natural decision to head towards a biryani serving joint for lunch today. If you have been following me on any of the Social Media platforms you will know that last month I started following the biryani trail of two Emirati gentlemen, who had put in an Herculean effort to find the top 5 biryanis in Dubai & Sharjah.

+Grub Shack Dubai was ranked 3rd in their list of top 5 Biryanis. I had been their earlier on a festive day and was unable to eat on that day as the waiting time was more than 45 minutes and I was too hungry to wait. So please book your table in advance as this restaurant has a large number of diners gracing them on every single day of the week.

I had done a bit of research on what to eat as I normally do before visiting any restaurant. So I started with the Strawberry Margarita, which if you have checked out this restaurant on #Zomato will know that it is a much loved drink here. Oh dear and what a delight it was. From seeing it being made to sipping into its overflowing deliciousness, this Virgin Strawberry Margarita had me floored completely. In fact it kept me company throughout the entire meal. I must mention here that the mixologist and the person in charge of the Mocktail bar Mr. Smigesh was kind enough not only to allow me to have a look at how he rustled this gorgeous frozen drink but also mentioned that only the freshest of strawberries were used with nothing artificial going into the Strawberry Margarita.

Another favorite of diners here is the Fiery Piri Piri Chicken. I loved the spices and sauces that was used to coat the chicken before being cooked in the tandoor. This a fusion dish and the sauce they piped on the sides of the platter was lip smacking and did complement the chicken well. Although this is fiery in nomenclature the heat and spice in this is quite moderate and can be well tolerated by anyone who loves a little heat in their food.

Finally the all important Biryani and we were not at all disappointed. Mr. Pradeep who was in charge of our table was quick to point out that this Biryani had been mellowed down keeping in mind the local palette of Dubai. So if you are fond of spicy food like me they serve a picante gravy to cater to your chilli loving taste buds. They are soon opening another restaurant in Sharjah which will serve a spicy Hyderabadi Biryani. I thought the Biryani was balanced in flavours and a good dish to order if you are dining here.

That summed up my food experience. The other factors like ambience was quite funky and service standards was very high. The gentleman in charge of Grub Shack, Mr. Lancy a seasoned global traveller I noticed visited every table, chatting up with diners. Off course I too had a wonderful culinary chatter with him.

Running on #kitebeach, #Jumeirah for 10kms made both of us really hungry. It's a long weekend in Dubai and we decided to set out on a culinary adventure at the stroke of midnight. I have been hearing a lot about these little treasures in #Deira and was so eager to eat in one of them. A friend from Islamabad had been recommending the Lahori Pakwan restaurant in Deira for long. I am #Haleem crazy and she thought they served one the best Haleem in Dubai. I can now reiterate her view as I too agree the Haleem they serve here not only has a beautiful texture but a spoonful into your mouth and your taste buds are doing a tap dance, being blown away by the taste. The chicken grill was good and the Biryani, well it's not easy to uplift the taste buds of a seasoned Biryani lover like me so easily. The unpretentious place, with chaste decor, is pocket friendly and worth every dime you spend.

+Café Bateel is an oasis of sophistication and charm. The elegant and chic interiors are sure to enthrall you the moment you step in. This is the place where you can just let go of time. As you cosy yourself up and tuck into their gourmet cuisine, you forget the passage of time, be it engrossed in a group conversation, a talk of romance, story telling session with your little one or simple me time, lost in Arabic coffee their Signature desserts and your favourite Novel.
.
.
I was there to memorialize a golden juncture of my life. Even the brief moment spent within its attractive realms, Café Bateel, Walk, JBR, left a beautiful mark in my mind. I ordered for their Signature dessert Bateel Date Pudding which is not only quite a stunner, but is literally an ambrosial edible art on a platter. The warm date pudding had hidden multiple folds of deliciousness within. Topped with a dollop of ice~cream, crowned with caramelized pecan, the trio were placed in a divine pool of butterscotch reduction. As you lift your spoon and very skillfully slice a portion of the Date Pudding, along with ice-cream and fit in the caramelized pecan and also manage to scoop up the butter scotch reduction, I am sure your heart too will beat as fast as mine did. The moment this divine bite lands on your tongue you are totally blown off by the carnival of flavours dancing all at once in your mouth. This dessert was indeed my little piece of food heaven. You too must give it a go at least once and see if you are sweetstruck like I was.

The La Baie Lounge at the +Ritz Carlton located on the Jumeirah Beach Road is a tiny tropical Isle situated amidst towering buildings on one side and the beautiful Dancing waves of the Persian Gulf kissing its shores on the other. Wherever your eyes wonders you are traversed by lush green foliage, or bright blue waters, so typical of tropical climes. I am always enamored by settings such as these. The lounge has incorporated this feeling of totally letting yourself being taken over by the natural charm, in its design and decor.

Though the summers are still sizzling in Dubai, the outdoors of the La Baie Lounge with it's really pretty views made us brave the heat and sit outdoors sipping into our drinks. Mine was a citrus loaded, passion fruit tinged mock tail topped with fresh mint leaves with a befitting name Caribbean Breeze ( fresh mint, passion fruit, lime juice, lemon soda). Was quite rejuvenating.

For the main course we ventured indoors and sat next to the large windows which totally brings the outdoor indoor. Service was brisk and the place was filled with diners, mostly tourists, staying at the property. We were served a mix of freshly baked breads with garlic butter and tomato labneh. Delightful I must say. Their Menu has some dishes for lunch and some for dinner service. As it was lunchtime, we ordered La Baie Signature Nasi Goreng with my choice of Chicken Satay. The dish was visually very inviting but completely failed to appease my taste buds. Along with this we ordered for Thai Style Wok Fried Noodles which again was only a visual treat. Sadly the food failed to match the outstanding ambience of this lounge.

Sometime ago two Emirate Gentlemen having over 63,000 followers on Instagram reviewed 54 restaurants in Dubai and Sharjah within a span of 7 months in search of the Best Biryani. They then shortlisted 5 restaurants and after numerous visits to these 5 restaurants and an online vote from their massive follower base they ranked the 5 restaurants. Jaffar Bhai's restaurant was ranked 4th. I decided to follow their Biryani Trail and started with Jaffar Bhai's restaurant today.
.
.
I had earlier visited Jaffar Bhai's restaurant when they had just opened in Dubai. But this time I looked at the dishes with a new perspective. Being a huge fan of raw onion, it was a pleasure to see onions sprinkled with chaat masala being the first element to land on the table. There was mint raita and lemon pickle too.
.
.
Their Zaffrani Sheermal Naan was outstanding. My senses were totally overtaken by the scent of saffron and the pillowy soft flat bread. It is one of the best Sheermal I have tasted so far. The Murg Angara did not appease my taste buds. However the Chicken Tikka Biryani was indeed superlative. Not too much of anything, the flavours were well balanced with succulent pieces of chicken delighting my taste buds now and then. Firni was the call for dessert. My voracious sweet tooth was totally left unimpressed by this dessert. But since it was the Biryani trail I was following, I would surely say that this is one Biryani you should try, if you are a Biryani lover like me. Their Biryani was in every way worthy of the spot given to them by the masses through the Emirati Duo.

Some days are made of poetry and magical potions. The Irish Village, Dubai has been my own piece of lush green oasis ebbing with music I love. Catching up with friends here is truly wonderful given the beauteous outdoor setting. Today was surprising pleasant and we lounged outdoors over chatters, soft drinks and delicious food. If you want to let your hair down and chill this is the perfect place in Dubai.
