Haleakala Flightless Moth (Thyrocopa apatela), Maui, Hawaii. Found only at the top of Haleakala volcano, this moth has lost its ability to fly. It survives in very harsh, desert-like conditions, along with several other species of birds and insects found nowhere else on earth. A quick review on google scholar turned up only three results pages, and most of the studies provided little more than taxonomic (biological classification) information. The limited habitat area appears to be getting even smaller. Surveys during the 1970's found moths at altitudes of 1,524 . Recent surveys found moths only above 2,900 meters, perhaps due to invasive ants.
