Sparrow in Flight

Taken from the same set as the previous sparrow photo, in CityCenterDC, this one catches it in flight as the sparrow shifts position in the fountains.

Chipmunk

I’m not sure if it’s Chip or Dale, but this chipmunk is sure enjoying himself a bit of leftover birdseed from one of the bird feeders. +Lauri Novak, maybe this image is a little more friendly to your eyes thank the last wildlife photo was!

Fully Aware

After the recent stirring of emotions that a photo I posted of a simple Black Rat Snake received, I thought I’d demonstrate a difference between a harmless snake like that one, and something a little more dangerous….something like this Copperhead, for instance.

While a bite from a Copperhead is rarely lethal, it is a snake you certainly would take care to avoid tangling with. This one is fully aware of his surroundings.

Black Snake

A black rat snake found near my house in the spring of 2013 coiled up in a defensive position. Most of the times, these are pretty docile as long as they aren’t bothered. These are easy to distinguish from the black racer because they are thicker and are white underneath.

I always leave these alone as they do a good job of thinning out mice in the area, and I’d much rather come across one of these even if it does startle you at first. If you’ve never seen one climb a tree, it’s an interesting sight as well. Their scales do a wonderful job of holding onto the bark, especially on trees like the pine tree.

This one allowed me to get up close and take several shots and never even seemed to care. If he’d have been a Black Racer, he wouldn’t have been quite so tolerant!

Butterfly

I spotted this butterfly at a lake last summer while I was on vacation. I was lucky that this one held still, as it often seems by the time I’m ready to photograph one it flitters off!

Cardinal

The Cardinal is one of my favorite small birds. The males are easy to spot thanks to the brilliant red coloring, and that red looks even better when illuminated by the late afternoon sun. This photo is a perfect example of that and was taken at a local lake, a little over a year ago.
