Butoh dancer, Taketeru Kudo, photographed during the course of a delightful masterclass with Isabel Muñoz last month. I was lucky to be in Kyoto at the right time for this valuable event as part of Kyotographie last month. I certainly hope to have opportunity to work with both these artists in the future.

Sakura - A few weeks ago I managed to be in Kyoto while the cherry blossoms were at their best. Nothing had prepared me for the intensity of the flowering and the level of enthusiasm from locals and visitors. I also was able to arrange a wonderful morning with Gion Higashi maiko, Tomitsuyu, photographing her under the blossom in a few locations. I first met Tomitsuyu four years ago, before she became a maiko, and it has been delightful to interview her and see her perform over that time. Buy my book ' Geiko & Maiko of Kyoto ' here :

Stopping to smell the .... blossoms
Geiko, Toshimana was really keen to be photographed with the sakura at the very end of our long costume shoot, yesterday. She has been so busy with her three performances each day in the Miagawacho odori and her busy schedule afterwards, that she had little time to enjoy it this year. Toshimana is featured on the cover of my book and it was really fantastic to work with her again. www.robertvankoesveld.com/shop/

Maiko Hisamomo from Pontocho who I photographed in early 2014. I gather Hisamomo is now a Geiko. Work on my book project took over three years and I have other smaller projects still in process in the kagai. The link to buy my book: Geiko & Maiko of Kyoto is on my website

The opening of the kabuki season
(temporarily moved to the Pontocho theatre during earthquake proofing renovations) brought five morning migrations where groups of Geiko and Maiko, glided in, swan-like in their precision and elegance.

Each kagai has it's own day and the theatre is also busy with lunch bearing bike riders providing splendid picnics for the breaks. (1/3 in set)

Today was the second day of the Erikae of Geiko Ichitomi from the Nakagishi Okiya in Gion Kobu. Newly debuted geiko always take time to make personal visits to Okiya and Ochaya and certain local businesses and are usually followed by a group of enthusiastic photographers. Itchtomi wore an especially wonderful kimono and obi. Geiko in this process of visiting are always accompanied by someone very familiar with the kagai and its culture, often an otokoshi, as was the case today.

There is a reason people go to the top locations in Kyoto...
But also go beyond the top ten...Visit some of the other 1000 temples, better still hire a good local guide. Take one or more of the wonderfull, deep Kyoto walks https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Kyoto-Walks-Pico-Iyer-ebook/dp/B00KFM2J0C. Also always check for Geiko and Maiko performances which are often available.
