Mount Napier (2016): Summit
I approached Mount Napier with very little information and few previously seen images, so the morning hike up to the summit through the forest and the fascinating volcanic structure once there, were something of a pleasant surprise for me.

One final shot from the summit looking towards the north and the start of the Grampians.

End.

Mount Napier (2016): Western Plains

The 360 degree views from the summit of Mount Napier were spectacular. The flat western plains show off any rise in the distance, and give me more mountains to add to my list. We are less than an hours drive to the Grampians here and there are also plenty more volcanic mounts that make up this vent system to explore. Just for the next couple days some views from the summit here.

Mount Napier (2016): Lava Shield

Mount Napier is thought to be Victoria’s youngest volcano with an eruption less than 32,000 years ago. Here’s the technical bit, it consists of a lava shield with a superimposed scoria cone. The cone being the highest point in the western districts of Victoria. It is part of the Newer Volcanics Province which extends some 15,000 square kilometres and has over 400 vents.

You can see the cone on the right of this picture, and the lave shield extending to the left. The shield has been breached as seen in the middle behind the trees. The crater left after the breach is extensive. A fascinating summit.

Mount Napier (2016): In Memory Of

Before I show you around the summit and show off the views from the top of Mount Napier, here is the obligatory plaque declaring another landmark first reached by Major Mitchell. If he were alive, he might think I was following him. It would be no mean feat.

Mount Napier (2016): Angled Ascent

I left my car in the deserted car park area and set off along the marked summit path of Mount Napier. I walked for probably one and a half kilometres through the ancient forest on a steady uphill path until I emerged above the tree line. It was at this point that the walk turned into a hike up a near 45 degree angle. Lucky it wasn’t a long walk.

Mount Napier (2016): Base

The drive to the base of Mount Napier was via a 6km forest track. The forest was some of the best untouched ancient temperate forest I have seen. The further I drove the more I got lost in the atmosphere. It was Saturday morning and it seems I was the only one with the idea of climbing the mount today.

Mount William 7/7 (2014): There's More

The view in this direction, from the peak of Mount William in the Grampians, just spurs me on to explore some more. There are more great peaks to reach and plenty of landscape to wander. I will be back…many times.

End.
