Larger Light Looming
Full Moon photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

As powerful as the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse lamp may be, it is no match for the power and majesty of the full moon of March 27, 2013.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this image turned out; at how clearly the Fresnel lens of the lighthouse can be seen. The surprising part…this photo was taken from the shore. Anyone familiar with the Kewaunee lighthouse knows the lighthouse sits at the end of a very long pier that extends 750 feet from shore.

To get this image I used a 300mm lens with a 2X teleconverter (effectively doubling the reach of the lens). It is simply luck that the focus was as sharp as it is since I had to focus manually. (A number of other shots that night were not so sharp.) Under low light conditions, particularly with the teleconverter, the camera’s auto-focus doesn’t work.

Normally, without the brightness of the full moon behind it, the lighthouse lamp would show up as a big, bright white blob.

Burst of Elegance
Fireworks photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The patterns and colors of fireworks bursts can create their own fine art that is beautiful, interesting and elegant.

I know I enjoy fireworks more than most – or at least, photos of fireworks. It’s the rich colors and unpredictable burst patterns, contrasting with the dark background, that I find very appealing. This is a good example of a fireworks image that captivates my attention. Am I the only one?

Colorful Kewaunee Fourth
Fireworks photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

A crowd of wide-eyed spectators watch the Fourth of July fireworks show from Selner Beach in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. Along with the booming colors the crowd was serenaded by the gentle, rhythmic sound of Lake Michigan waves on the shore.

I enjoy photographing fireworks. I particularly enjoy capturing the fine detail. Unfortunately, you have to really zoom in to see the kind of detail I’m talking about. Fortunately, with the large megapixels of today’s cameras, you can see some amazing detail when you enlarge the image. You won’t be able to see that kind of detail in this image, but you can view a larger version to get a better, overall view by clicking on the photo.

Beachside Spectacular
Fireworks photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

One of the best vantage points for the 4th of July fireworks display in Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a blanket or comfortable chair on the beach. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

I’ve photographed the fireworks in Kewaunee many times, but I usually do so from a spot on the harbor. I like capturing the reflection of the firework’s colors on the water’s surface. (Check some of the previous Kewaunee fireworks posts on this site here: http://popsdigital.com/?s=kewaunee%2C+Fireworks) This year, I decided to try a different location, joining the spectators on the beach.

The fireworks are discharged from the pier that stretches out into the lake.

Slipping Toward Twilight
Night photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

Shades of night are slipping into the River Walk area of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I was fortunate to spend some time doing some night photography with an experienced photographer from the Milwaukee area. It’s always great, when away from home, to have a photographer familiar with the location give you benefit of their experience.

Fishing Light
Night photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The full moon and lighthouse presented a dramatic backdrop for a couple preparing to fish off the pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. When ready, they would cast a seine net over the side and illuminate the surface of the water with their lantern, hoping to attract small Lake Michigan fish – smelt.

The evening was much darker than it appears in this image and I was a lot farther away than one would think at first glance. I was on shore which put the lighthouse about 750 feet away. The moon had to be at least three or four times that far.

Streaking Past the Avalon
Night photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The Avalon Theatre is alive, again, in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. This historic landmark theater was completely renovated and refitted to offer patrons a unique entertainment experience. The traditional movie theater seating has been replaced by leather chairs with a table between them where movie goers can order and enjoy a meal – with their movie – prepared on site and served by the wait staff.

The Avalon is a distinctive example of the Mediterranean Revival architectural style. The lobby features Moorish arches, twisting Mediterranean columns, figures that resemble gargoyles and a statue of Athena, a Greek goddess — all from the original building. It is the first Wisconsin theater built for movies with sound.

I happened to be there (and created this image) on the night of their Grand Opening celebration in March of 2015. The place was full of young professionals enjoying drinks in the lobby and touring the theater. I was hanging out with a photography friend from the area who took me to a few spots in Milwaukee to shoot some night scenes. He, rightfully, thought this would be a promising location.

The photo, itself, is a long exposure (20 seconds). The white and red lines were created by the lights from the vehicles that passed by while the camera shutter was open. Those spots in the upper left of the photo, I believe, are the result of moisture from a fine mist that must have fallen on my lens. Normally they wouldn’t be so prominent. I think the mercury street lights and the aperture setting of f/22 I used for this shot brought them out. Normally, I would work to remove those from an image…but in this case, I liked the effect and left them in.

You can learn more about the Avalon’s renovation, amenities they offer and its interesting history simply by Googling it.

Harbor Lights       full moon photo by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

The full moon staged a dramatic entrance near the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse on Friday, July 15, 2011.

It was the first night of Kewaunee’s annual Trout Festival. I had scouted out the area and selected a spot to take photos of the upcoming fireworks show. While waiting, the moon slowly emerged from the horizon – starting out to the left of the lighthouse and moving directly behind the lighthouse and beyond, as you can see.

I was excited to be able to be in the perfect spot to catch the two together. There was one spoiler, though. The pier to the lighthouse happens to be the site of the fireworks launch. The technicians putting on the fireworks show were on the pier, as were their vehicles and equipment. Photoshop to the rescue!

The moon and lighthouse together would still make a cool image, but I thought they would be better without the distracting clutter. It took a little time to digitally clear the pier, but I think the final product was worth it.

Evening at Pabst       cityscape by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

An early evening view of the historic, Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin under a deepening night sky.

I finally got around to processing it.  I took this awhile ago, when a Milwaukee area photographer friend showed me around the downtown area…after an enjoyable meal at Jackson’s, the restaurant located in the lower left corner of the Pabst building.

There’s some great detail in this image, which can be seen more clearly in the larger view you’ll see if you click on the photo.
