#joinindaily - Around the Bend

Today's #joinindaily by +Johnny Wills theme is "Around the Bend".
Mountain Reflections
Much of the view of the train ride from Whittier to Denali looks similar to this.  At this point we were not far from arriving in Denali National Park.  We were fortunate enough in that our car had an observation deck in the back.  The lighting was just right at this point to get some nice reflections from the side of our car.

I spent a few minutes looking in Google Earth for the specific mountain this is and was having a hard time finding it.  I know the general area of where this was, but couldn't pinpoint the specific mountain.  I'll have to come up with the ID when I have more time.

More Steam Engines
I guess I'm on a train kick right now. I had such a great time shooting these steam engines at the East Lancashire Railway in Bury, UK that I just keep wanting to go back and look at the images from that evening.

East Lancashire Railway - Steam Engine Runs
Today the steam engines were running at the East Lancashire Railway in Bury. Thanks so much to +David Smith for shuttling me around today and letting me know about this. I decided to give this one a more nostalgic look.

East Lancashire Railway - Night Shoot
Thanks to +David Smith I was able to attend this event that I would never have know about (http://www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk/events-activities/2016/3/spring-steam-gala-photographic-night-shoot-sold-out.aspx). Tomorrow he was kind to offer to take me out shooting in the UK countryside which I've never really seen other than from the air or from a train between cities.

I just love meeting up with fellow G+ photographers and in this case fellow scavenger hunters. G+ Photographers and Scavenger Hunters are awesome!

Caltrain Station, San Francisco
Last month when I was in San Francisco, I met up with +Alex Lapidus & +Linda Villers to do some shooting. I didn't have a rental car, so I took Caltrain to meet up with them. I had some time to kill before my train departed, so I took the opportunity to get a few train shots.

Three Rivers Rambler
I noticed that there were some old train cars and a caboose down at the Riverwalk in Knoxville. After I was down there I looked it up and you can take a 90 minute steam train ride along the Tennessee River (http://www.threeriversrambler.com).  The Rambler consists of a 1932 coach car, a merchandise car, and a 1940 open-air car.  I love steam trains, so this sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Best Seat Possible
When we were in Alaska in May we ended our cruise portion in Whittier and boarded a train to Denali.  This was the view as we were leaving Whittier and about to go into the first tunnel through the mountains.

We were fortunate and had the best car on the train because we were in an Alaska Railways car rather than one of the Princess cars.  All of the cars were the ones with the glass ceilings, but our car had an uncovered outdoor viewing area in the back of the car.  This allowed me to shoot without having to shoot through glass.

Even better was the fact that not only were we the first car behind the engine, but our seats were the very first row.  We had the great views from above like everyone, but we also a great view in front and nobody could get in front of us to block our view.  How cool is that?!!!

It was an amazing train ride, although quite long at nearly 9 hours.  I was expecting the trains to go faster than the highways like they do in most places, but we topped out at about 45mph from what I could tell.
