On the Edge,   Eldorado Peak

Photo
After climbing Eldorado Peak I was able to take this photo of the next team climbing this distinctive ridge. I spent 3 days and 2 nights on an ice cap with various climbs. All of the climbs were exceptional and the views and photography were also great.

Climbing Junkie Story
At night I would sleep with at least one quart of water so it would not freeze. I was able to make several quarts of water each day using a couple of methods and excluding a stove. Even though this area gets the worlds record of snowfall time and time again. There was no melt-off that was easily accessible to gather.  ....Our record snows; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow#Records

Is it time for the +Mountain Monday recap? Yes it is. Each Monday the photos are considered and usually published the next day or so. If you have a nice shot to share add +Mountain Monday to your post. Happy summer to all in the mountains! +Randy T

What is it like to Alpine Climb?

I thought it would be good to share what it is like to be on your own in the mountains. Common sense and experience must rule because the Mountains rarely forgive even the smallest mistake.

Climbing in a White-out ? YouTube Video too.

My YouTube Link for this climb:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG-6cMdSJu8&t=0s

I went climbing solo last year during a White-Out on Mt Formidable. Does that sound Scary, it was. That is the clouds rolled in and out obscuring my vision on how to go up or how to climb down. My plan was to hike and climb my way to within striking distance to Mt Formidable. I started early in the morning from the suburbs of Seattle and had just enough time to not only make the approach but to also do the climb. It was a true rush of a climb, and also an accomplishment for me going solo!

Photo
After the climb I snapped this photo of the clouds rolling over this nameless crag. Most of the time before this photo, I could not see anything being surrounded in clouds like fog with just my gps and my common sense.

The Climb
http://www.summitpost.org/mount-formidable/154648
The link above is a good description of the climb. Unfortunately Ed Miller died while climbing with others on Mt. Formidable. He was both a climber and photographer. I was solo and concerned about how the climb would work out. Back story: It was just a coincidence that in 2006, my friends and I separated to different climbing destinations. I climbed Mt Goode solo while my friends climbed near formidable and talked with Ed the day before he died. Climbing is dangerous and the mountains let you make few mistakes and live.

More on the Climb
I did roll into a high camp earlier than I thought, and had time to climb Formidable that same day. The only problem was that the weather was very iffy with clouds accumulating on the Crest, which is normal and trouble for the alpine climber. I did press on and did the climb with the option of just coming down and finishing the climb in the morning. I shot some video clips of the climb for those interested below:

What was I doing Last Year ?

The 2017 climbing season is in full swing. Last year this was an early season climb of Icy Peak , WA. We just finished a horrible wet, cloudy, rainy period that lasted forever and the weather has now changed for the better.

Of course it is Big Time Avalanche season and I hope that we didn't lose another climber this weekend. Alpine climbs will be risky for another few weeks so be careful if you head out!

No Swimming Today

I saw this small nameless lake on the North Side of Mt Hinman, Wa., during a climb in the area. I decided to check it out late in the climbing season and hoped I could swim there. It turned out the wind was chilly and wouldn't stop blowing for the two days I was out. I did enjoy seeing this lake and other small lakes that have not been named, and some not mapped. +Randy T

Sunrise to Sunset Climbing

Actually I was in the dark during part of that day. I started before dawn and came out on headlamp for an hour. The climbs were around 25 miles+ a few peaks along the way. I usually spend around 15 hours when I climb in this area.

Photo
I took this photo of the Lynch Glacier and Mt Daniel from Lynch Peak, WA.

The Climb
For most of the climb, the weather was not so great. I wondered if it would rain for most of the first half of that day. After climbing Lynch Peak, during the descent, the weather improved. I was able to take a few nice photos of Mt Daniel. Yes! Later I returned to the Pacific Crest Trail by a new way for me that I buried in my head, after studying Google Earth and the local topos. It turns out Google Earth is great for many things except for both fine and gross details of cliffs. I don't fault Google Earth at all, satellites have just so much data. Yes, I did find many cliffs to skirt and drop. I am accustomed to this type of terrain and was elated once I got back to a really trail before sunset. Trad climbing at it's best.!

Randy :)

My first YouTube Video

This video I took about a year ago. I decided to try to put together some climbing videos. This was my first.

I found video is much more difficult than still shots. I enjoyed putting the video together and to share with the local climbers that have an interest.

The Climb
I have done this climb solo many times. This time I climb with a new climber to the Alpine World. He had some trouble with the exposure so I was not able to capture as much of the rock climb as I wanted. At one point in the climb, I had to kick steps into the soft snow on the face with my super slippery rock shoes. I have done this before and always kick with a slight downhill angle so I won't suddenly banana peel out off the slippery snow. We both got a little wet and cold during the climb. Once we were out of the rock shoes and back to normal boots, are feet warmed up beyond numb.

Chimney Rock and Lemah Peak

Another favorite photo; I took the photo while making my way in to climb Lemah Mountain on the left. The other peak on the right is Chimney Rock and is a difficult alpine ascent that few people dare. I climbed it with Brian on the overhanging North Face. It was a push to do in three days.

A Night on the Ice

This was were I decided to spend the night after climbing Mt Booker. It was a long day and I came down in the dark. This part of the snow/ice was fairly flat so I spent the night here.

I find it interesting that most all of my photos have snow in them.

The Climbs
I did Mt Booker and Mt Buckner, WA. The flowers on some of the hillsides were unbelievable. Buckner had a long steep run-out that I was being cautious on. The summit views were awesome.
