Earth Day 2017 : Waiting for Lyrid Meteors at Durdle Door last night
Last night I walked over the cliffs from where I live in Weymouth (which is the source of the streetlighting in the distance of the photograph) to Durdle Door in order to see the Lyrid Meteor Shower. Luckily I saw couple of meteors that flew overhead shortly after midnight. Ionised gas in the meteors' trail burned up upon entering the Earth's atmosphere to create a glow from their trails. The shower occurs annually as the Earth passes through the dust left over from Comet Thatcher , which last visited the inner solar system in 1861 and only fully orbits the sun once every 415 years

Flakes of comet dust, most no bigger than grains of sand, strike Earth's atmosphere traveling 49 km/s (110,000 mph) and disintegrate as streaks of light.

A 22 degree lunar halo over Wareham
Sometimes when the temperature in the sky drops and ice crystals form in clouds at high altitude it is possible to see a large 22 degree lunar halo around the moon. This one formed last night as seen from the River Bridge in Wareham Dorset.

Weymouth Harbour in Dorset
It's always interesting to walk around Weymouth Harbour after dark to see the fishing boats. However it is usually difficult to take decent photos because of the different streetlights, security lights and arc lights there. This shot was taken last night at f18 which hopefully has made the many streetlights form star shapes.

Portland Bill Lighthouse
Portland Bill Lighthouse last night..not surprisingly a tad chilly there but clear skies for a change. Portland lighthouse is unique in having a "white" beam on the top of it but also a second "red" beam from one third of the way up it which warns of the Shambles sandbank.

MilkySelfie
Last night I went down to the beach at Osmington Mills overlooking Weymouth Bay in the hope of seeing the first perseid meteors of this year's Perseid Meteor Shower which should come to a peak around the 11th of the month. I did see two meteors or shooting stars last night but it was lovely to look at the Milky Way with the lights of Portland in the distance. I just randomly triggered my shutter in the hope of capturing a meteor since as they appear and disappear so quickly it is virtually impossible to react quickly enough if I leave my finger on the shutter cable. Anyway purely by fluke there is a light trail to the left of the Milky Way here which may be an Iridium satellite or it might be a Perseid. I need a new torch.

Weymouth starring in Christopher Nolan's new film Dunkirk
Over the last 24 hours a part of Weymouth harbour has been reorganised to resemble a 1940s scene based on the Second World War. Traffic restrictions have been introduced along the harbourside and electricians have been reverting modern streetlights to 1940s era lighting. Modern boats and the RNLI lifeboat have been moved to new moorings out of the line of film cameras and a couple of veteran lorries and vans have been parked alongside the quay. "Dunkirk" is being directed by Christopher Nolan who also directed Inception and Interstellar and will star Kenneth Brannagh, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance. Harry Styles of One Direction fame and Tom Hardy will star in the Dorset segments.

The trailer for "Dunkirk is here:
