Another Perspective @ Garden of the Gods.

This is the same rock formation as one below, but with a different camera and from the other side. I've not posted before - except as this collection's cover photo (cropped).

For 'photo bugs' it's not my usual (DSLR) camera but my tiny, go-anywhere, indestructible Pentax beast. Despite its small eye it does some nice things in its various modes and its own processing.

More images 'here' and in my "Americana" collection on G+, or @ http://www.fenichel.com/americana.shtml

Number 9.... Number 9.... Number 9....

Here is another view of #9, a narrow-gauge Shay (steam) locomotive circa 1884, lovingly maintained over its long history.

Most recently used to haul lumber, Engine #9 is now a workhorse of the remaining portion of the Georgetown Loop. This was part of an essential railroad line during the gold and silver boom in the Colorado mountains, serving the mines at Silver Plume and Georgetown, traversing Clear Creek Canyon in a series of corkscrews and bridges -including the Devil's Gate High Bridge - and considered a fete of modern engineering at the time.

From the 1880's to early 1900's, this line was popular with "city dwellers" from Denver and nearby cities as a scenic way to escape city life and comfortably visit the Rocky Mountains.

Yellow-bellied Marmot

This friendly creature was happy to pose, standing up so we can see why they're called "yellow-bellied". Native to mountainous areas in Western U.S. and Southwest Canada, it is also known as a "rock chuck".

Typically thriving at elevations above 6500 feet (2000 m) - here near the summit of Pike's Peak s/he seems happy at 14,000 feet. Marmots are diurnal - here enjoying the bright morning light. They spend much of their time in burrows, and much of the year hibernating.

Pike's Peak Cog Train

Following in the tradition of Swiss cog trains, the Broadmoor Pike's Peak Cog Train is America's second cog train but the highest rack railway in the world, and the 2nd highest railway (of any type) in the Northern Hemisphere. The Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway uses a double cog, or Abt, system. It can climb inclines at a 48-degree grade, has a maximum speed of 9MPH, and enjoys a perfect safety record.

Begun in 1891, the cog rail celebrated its 125th anniversary on June 30.

Marmot's-eye view - Pike's Peak

A sampling from and near the summit. The views here inspired the poem which was later set to music to become America's national anthem, America the Beautiful.

Here's a yellow-bellied marmot taking it in, a few scenic views, and the Manitou Incline. Here you'll find - and will see in the image if you can view hi-resolution - some very serious athletes training, and serious hikers as well. On Pike's Peak summit one finds a wide diversity of attire being worn, from shorts or sweats, to full-mountaineering with poles, to bundled up, to traditional clothing from around the world, represented among the many global tourists to Pikes Peak.

Like the sign says, this is a genuine "fourteener", a mountain with altitude over 14,000 feet. (In metric, that's a "forty-three-hundreder" at 4300.728m). A few peeks from Pike's Peak, coming up.
