Often leaving some negative space in an image can create balance as well as tension and focus the viewer's attention to the main subject. In this image I used a long telephoto lens with a shallow depth of field to create a pleasant out of focus background. In this case, the out of focus background is almost 50% of the image, but this makes you look more closely at the main leaf with water drops in the middle top of the photo. I think this combination of detail in the upper half and no detail in the lower half of the image creates both tension as well as balance.

This is an orchid I found at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the big island. I love to photograph plants at botanical gardens for 2 reasons. Firstly, botanical gardens often have unusual species which come from exotic locations which you just cannot find in other locations. Secondly, they also take such good care of the plants that you can find specimens with no blemishes. In the wild, plants are often eaten by insects or attacked by diseases so it can be difficult to find blemish free specimens. I like this closeup shot because it almost looks like the face of a dragon and the purple color against a green background is also very nice.

Recently the autumn colors have been very striking here in Seattle so I decided to go to Kubota Japanese Garden to see what I could find. This was one of my favorite images of close up leaves. If you look closely there are drew drops and I also like the selective focus of this image. Having an out of focus background really makes the individual leaves stand out!

Recently this image was published in a calendar. I made this image several years ago when I hiked up to Mazama Ridge at Mt. Rainier NP early in the morning in late August. It was quite cold that morning and the lupines were covered in frost. Even the water drops were frozen solid. I like the patterns of the frosted leaves with frozen water drops. Mother Nature is such a great artist!

Botanical gardens are great places to find unusual plants. This is beehive ginger which I found at the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. In the 18th &19th centuries many people from Great Britain explored the world to find unusual plants which they brought back to collectors at home. This plant is native to Malaysia and is one I had never seen before. Even some of the most common plants in ornamental gardens around the world today were originally found by these botanist explorers in very remote corners of the globe and then propagated and disseminated by enthusiasts in Great Britain.

Botanical gardens are a great place to photograph plants because they are so well looked after. In the wild, most plants have some blemishes due to insects or stress from the weather. But the plants in botanical gardens live such a pampered life that they are often blemish free. This is a close up of Parodia, a cactus native to Brazil, which I found at the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. I like this abstract design looking directly down on the top of the cactus.

When I visited California in the spring several years ago, many wildflowers were blooming. In Santa Barbara I went to the botanical garden where they had planted several beds with typical wildflowers, one of which was this yellow lupine. It was the first time I had ever seen yellow lupine so I just had to take some photos. I like the out of focus background in this image which lets your eye focus on the in focus flower in the foreground.

I like to shoot monochrome images. When a photo has only one color, your eye can focus on the lines and composition of the image. This is why many photographers like to shoot black and white. This image is new growth of a corn lily at Mt. Rainier NP. I love the green color of the new leaves and the lines are very interesting.

I am a big fan of plants and when viewed close up, they become an abstract composition. This is an old image which has been very popular. Agaves are such interesting plants and there are so many different species and varieties. I found this one at the Desert Botanical Museum in Phoenix.
